Really a crap non-conference schedule for the most part.

I wonder why they didn't try and work out a few deals over the next few weeks instead of going ahead & releasing the schedule.

RE: Non-Conference Basket Ball schedule released
If we play the tougher schools this year in OOC, do we win enough games for it to matter what the schedule looks like?

Perhaps, the focus isn't on strength of schedule, but putting butts in seats. Therefore, a lot of home games with a chance at a lot of wins. Or, maybe CJH is trying to teach and develop a culture of winning and he can't do that with well played games against good opponents that ultimately end in losses. Could be a long range plan that is on a steady incline as far as schedule strength goes...who knows?

Honest question: Do you think the casual fan (UAB's target) will show up more to see a 13-2 team who has had an easier schedule or a 8-7 team that has played some over their head?

Games against Columbus College and Newberry is not going to put butts in the seats, even though you win.

This schedule gives you the chance of one decent crowd - against North Carolina, and even that game might be tough to sell out with the game on Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend with the students out and people out of town.

Another problem with this schedule.

We have a lot of young players that will only see a hostile crowd twice (@LSU @Northeastern) before conference season. Someone said above that this schedule may be because of the tournament. Not true. The tournament only counts as one game toward your total.

A lot of home games is nice, but not at the expense of the season. How a team performs in true road games is something the committee looks at as well.

I predict that the UNC game will indeed be a sellout if for no other reasons than (1) a lot of "Memphis-game" fans will show up and because (2) there are a ton of UNC fans within a 200-mile radius who rarely get to see them play in person. Remember all of the Carolina blue at the NIT game three years ago?

Yeah. This isn't even really a question to me. I'd be shocked if it wasn't a sell-out, or at least really close to one.

I've expected sellouts too many times at UAB games, only to be disappointed.

I suspect this will be a Sunday afternoon game for TV purposes, which means we will be competing against the NFL at the height of their season.

I agree that there will be a lot of NC fans there. They are true basketball fans. It may sellout, I just said there are a lot of things working against it, which in UAB's history, usually means failure.

When was the last sellout we have had prior to conference season?

Oklahoma State in 2005-2006 had 8200. I don't think that was even considered a sellout.

Going back to the late 1990's I don't see any others that would be considered a sellout.

Butler 09 is listed at 8367. Not a complete sellout.

Attendance at games normally picks up (when it picks up) after the Christmas holidays.

It will be hard to get a sell out on Thanksgiving weekend.

Now if UNC fans decide to flood the place, 8000 or so is possible.

Was Indiana at the BJCC a sellout?

Some DePaul games had over 17,000 & the Indiana game had 16,982.

17,309 & 17,222 for example.

Technically a sellout? Maybe.

RE: Non-Conference Basket Ball schedule released
Bartow Arena's Top 10 games all had over 8900 in attendance.

It would have to be a very special game to get that many people in.

I suspect the previous game against UNC had somewhere between 8000 and 8500 there.

Interesting tidbit. 6 out of 8 of our top attended games home or away included either Louisville or Kentucky. Even the game in the tournament against Washington was another one of the 8. (Kentucky fans contributing to the attendance of course)

The sweet 16 game against Kansas in the same tournament was the largest attended game ever where UAB was playing.

The (very) safe money would always be on an OOC game NOT being a sellout at Bartow, I think. But having witnessed the UNC & Duke feeding frenzies up here on any tickets to games within driving distance, I'm fairly certain UNC will be a sellout unless one or both teams have proven to be just completely "turrible" by that weekend.
