What? You forgot he had kids with him or you forgot it's closed?
Who remembers when that was The Loft?
I was a regular at the Loft. Best prime rib in town with a great salad and the soups ~ wow.

And an ice cream place over there. Was it called Swensen's?
It was. It was short-lived, but the ice cream concoctions were to die for, plus the atmosphere was cool. I have no idea why that place didn't last.

If you hit the Peabody the intro to the ducks, the march and a few minutes of just watching them is good. But there is a small museum of sorts that they have on the mezzanine level. It has some artifacts from the old days of the Peabody. You should see that too when you are there. If you make it to the rooftop, enjoy the view, it's pretty nice.
A few more choices downtown to eat:
Majestic Grille
Local
Flights (sort of pricey but good)
Aldo Pizza
Blues City
King's Palace
Little Tea Shop
On Beale, Miss Polly's and Johnny G's, and Blues City. The shops on Beale are fun for kids, esp. A. Schwab's. Texas de Brazil, next to the Peabody, is a grilled meat extravaganza, and the brunch is also good. The desserts at Kooky Canuck are amazing. Flying Fish near the Peabody would be lots of fun for kids, and the menu is large.

Victorian Village just outside of downtown has lovely historic homes, esp. the Fontaine Home.
I think it's the Grotto in Memorial Park out on Poplar near 240.

Actually, OP, Graceland is fine and safe to visit.
Your comments on Riverside Drive are spot on.
No, not funny, I was just saying they could drive by, see the outside of Graceland, even get out and take pictures, see the Lisa Marie, maybe even visit the gift shop there all in 30 minutes. Dont have to do the package tour stuff and move on to the next sight, which for me from there would be Chucalissa. You dont have to spend much time there either to get the sense of how Native Americans were once long ago settled up and down these bluffs. Trying to help them see as much as possible while here, thats all. I'm sure Graceland is great if you want to make a day of it and are a Elvis fan, heck it would be the #1 sight probably. Id drive back by the National Ornamental Metal Museum and check out that Indian Mound there as I'm running 55 to downtown, there is a view there that is breathtaking as well. We used to drive down to the Church of the River (I think it was) and check out the Mississippi from under the Mem-Ark bridges, heck sometimes we would stroll out on the railroad bridge and go down the drop and sit on the bridge piers awhile and spend an evening. I'm sure those days are over as that was 30 years ago now. Stop in or by the Arcade Restaurant while your downtown too. Same way with the Pink Palace, dont really have to go in, just go by. I used to love their Planetarium if it is still running. Just lots to do, everybody has their opinion, glad you appreciate the crest at Riverside Drive, it really is breathtaking...Oh, forgot the Magevney House it is pretty neat to tour and quick.

Go see the new hippo at the zoo. Go eat at either Houston's or the Rendezvous.

Magevney House has been closed for several years, but you can walk around it and into the back yard. It's really a shame.

Dear AAC snobs (JK). Coming to Memphis with fam. What to do?
Oh yeah, go to the arcade for breakfast
Sweet potato pancakes must be tried
Plus the atmosphere and history
And another great breakfast place I don't remember if anyone mentioned is Brother Juniper's over by campus
Nobody has mentioned Germantown Commissary BBQ probably bc it's most likely out of the way, but I have to give it a shout out as my favorite

I agree about the Commissary. I have known Walker since he was in Germantown High School. I need to get by both the Arcade and Brother Juniper's the next time I am in town.

I'm not sure if he didn't notice the "j/k", or the fact that he, himself, said "drive by". To get the comedy, you have to notice both.

I can't believe that I didn't think of popping in. The owner went to the same university as I did in Montreal.
Something to put on your list for next time. :)
This Fall hopefully ?

I'll definitely go with my customer if that's where he wants to have lunch. The trick is to be able to time the meetings at the same time we play football or basketball...or both.

In 48 hours I spent $300 on barbecue and $500 on Memphis gear. It is 100% doable.

You could hit up the original Gus's for lunch in mason and drive 2 minutes to bozos for dinner. I've done it.
I was miserable but it was worth it.
