ODU's athletic program ranked 101st nationally
Another good article from Harry Minium

ODU's athletic program ranked 101st nationally

In spite of an uncharacteristically down season in men’s basketball, Old Dominion fared well in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup competition for 2012-2013, finishing 101st nationally out of 340 Division I schools.

ODU was first among Colonial Athletic Association schools and second among the 16 schools in its new home, Conference USA. ODU joined Conference USA on July 1.

No. 54 Tulsa was the only the only current C-USA school to finish ahead of the Monarchs.

Personally, I wouldn't consider that "doing well".

ER, everything is relative. Being in the top third of the county's schools, ranked ahead of our old conference mates and ranked second against all of our new conference mates speaks well for the University, its athletic programs and its student athletes. Does it leave room for improvement? Of course it does, and I predict we will continue to see immprovement over the coming years.

In the meantime, we should all take pride in the successes our Monarch teams have enjoyed.

RE: ODU's athletic program ranked 101st nationally
We ranked 99 in 2011 and we ranked 79 in 2012. I'm sure basketball was the big determining factor that set us back and obviously our other sports have improved to be ranked essentially the same as when we had our best basketball team. I'm glad we fare well against our conference mates and I know competing with most of the BCS schools isn't going to happen, but I'd like to see us get in the top 50. I think if we can get basketball back on track, continue the football momentum, and continue to improve other sports, this is a tough but realistic goal.

ER,
Frankly I was unaware of the 2011 and 2012 rankings, and yes, basketball clearly is largely responsible for this year’s fall in the rankings. I agree with your comments. Organizations and individuals only achieve greatness by setting standards high and working to reach lofty goals.

Bobby Wilder’s mantra is simple but spot on.

Aim High, Monarchs!
