I took Music Appreciation, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

But only places like Auburn offer "joke" courses.

I took Human Sexuality. Margaret Freese. Best class ever. I make use of the lessons from that class every day.

I also took Life on Earth.

If colleges and universities only offered core curriculum classes in their major subject fields, they would need less than 2/3 of their faculty and even fewer of their enrollment, and there would be no "basket weaving classes" for some of its challenged students. The term "University" arises from the ancient Greek ideal of the "well rounded (educationally speaking) student" who knows more than just his major subject field. These courses that get so much criticism from those who may never have been there are conceived and offered to achieve this university goal. Many are (or used to be) single hour semester credit courses that are added on to a full credit schedule in major courses. In this modern era when an internet class from anywhere on Earth can be accessed on any campus, such courses can have a myriad of subjects to enrich and broaden the experiences of the modern students - what the university experience is supposed to be about.

Marriage and the Family with Dr. Porterhouse. It didn't hurt that he wrote the textbook. Propaganda and Public Persuasion was pretty interesting. Music Appreciation came at just the right time.
