OT: Brad Stevens leaving Butler to coach the Celtics
@WojYahooNBA: Danny Ainge hires Brad Stevens to coach the Celtics. Stealth.

I didn't see that coming, but I haven't been keeping up with it, too much.

Edit for link: http://espn.go.com/boston/nba/story/_/id...head-coach

Hmmm ... I don't see this working out well. We'll see if he can handle NBA players.

It's a Rick Pitino redux. If the Celtic's suck and land Andrew Wiggins then he's probably successful. If not, it's not like he won't have schools throwing themselves at him after his Celtics departure.

Exactly. He'll have plenty of suitors if it goes south- so, a different type of job security, I suppose. The guy is a phenomenal college coach.

I absolutely love this hire. He'll take his lumps initially but his coaching style is perfectly suited for the NBA. Rick Pitino had an ego; same as Calipari. Stevens don't have an ego but his demeanor will gain the respect of the players.

I guarantee you Stevens will be successful with the Celtics.

I don't get why he'd want to do this (money). He didn't seem like an NBA guy. lol Butler.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, this makes more sense than I initially thought. Stevens isn't a great recruiter and he is clearly and X and O guy.

And he will be a WHOLE LOT richer when/if he returns to the college ranks.

It may be mean, but as an ODU fan, I'm kind of enjoying their pain.

It'll be interesting to see how Stevens does, I'm not sure how well his style of play will translate to NBA.

This is big news. However sometimes great college basketball coaches don't succeed in the NBA. Take Tim Floyd, John Calipari & Rick Pitino for example. Pitino coached the Celtics but resigned with a 102–146 record.

Even if he fails in the NBA, colleges will throw themselves at him. He has plenty of job security. This move is a no brainer for him.

I think this is a totally different situation.

Calipari is successful because he is a runner for the NBA. He can win when he has more talent then everybody else, but you can say that about a lot of guys.

Pitino is a great coach but he is also an egomaniac. He couldn't relate to NBA players and he made way too many ridiculous, impatient moves.

I don't know as much about Floyd, but I know that Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach combined wouldn't win with those Bulls teams.

Stevens is one of the best X's and O's coaches in basketball and he relates to players. His two greatest strengths are the two parts that are necessary to succeed as an NBA coach. He has shown that he can max out the talent of his players. He is going into a situation where they know they have to be patient. He has a GM who has shown he can quickly turn draft picks and young players into a championship team (and he has a ton to work with. 9 1st rounders over the next 5 years plus Rondo).

I think this is a gigantic win for both sides and I bet Stevens will be one of the longest tenured coaches in the NBA before all is said and done.

Yes, he will do well with the Celtics as one of his disciples, Matthew Graves will be successful at South Alabama.

Celtics have something like 5 or 6 1st round picks over the next 3 years...and no doubt Wiggins (as of now) is the big prize in the 2014 draft.

Celtics are saving a ton of money by hiring Stephens (making less than half of what Doc was being paid), and yes, they need the Celtics to lose...and lose a lot next year...and maybe the year after as well.

They hired Stephens because they kid liked the thought of being paid $22 Million, even if he was fired after a year or two...plus, Danny thought Stephens had the temperament to lose...and to be able to handling a lot of losing.

Worst thing the Celtics could do is finish 7th - 9th in the not so great East...as the Celtics need to be in the bottom 3 of the league to grab some top future talent.
