RE: Hypothetical
OTOH, isn't the FCS championship kind of like the NIT title in basketball? Yeah, you win the thing and that's great and all, but there's a whole other group of schools out there which are actually playing for the big prize.
The joke used to be that winning the NIT just makes you the 65th best team (or whatever) in the country. I realize that it's not true, but to continue the analogy does winning the FCS title make you just the 120th or whatever best team?

No, it means of the 119 teams that compete in FCS, you are the very best. National Champs! There can be only one.

I couldn't even tell you who the World Series Champs are without looking it up. I am not a baseball guy. That kind of goes to the point that 1AA fans know who wins because it is important to them. I could care less if someone who is a Oklahoma or Nebraska fan knows who won the 1AA Championship. My need for JMU to be known by everyone in the country isn't as great as yours. But, I like winning Championships and we will never do that in 1A football. I still want to go 1A, but am realistic that we will be a second tier 1A. We won't be known much better nationally by being a second tier 1A than being in 1AA. Do you think people in Southern California know who Western Kentucky is or FIU? We are what we are and I am ok with that.

That's a terrible anology. Minor League Baseball is a farm system used to develop MAJOR league baseball players. They are paid professional athletes and most teams lose/promote/demote over a dozen players each year.
FCS football is still college football. The FCS does not feed into the FBS, JMU does not get raided for talent by FBS schools. JMU sends players to the NFL as well (and just as many recently as many low level FBS schools).

That is true...But the goals of FBS and FCS football are the same (compete to win a championship, unless you're in the Ivy League). The goal of minor league baseball is to develop talent, winning is a a secondary aspect.

RE: Hypothetical
But the general public, along with many people from FCS schools, care about FCS and AAA baseball equally. They don't.

The answer to the WKU/FIU question is "yes." Think of a second-tier, as some call it, school in Cal and see if you know of them. Fresno State, San Jose State, San Diego State are some examples. Or take it to another state- consider some lower tier school that play fbs and see if you have heard of them: Middle Tennessee, Akron, Univ of Buffalo, Eastern Michigan etc. FBS football will immediately elevate our school and program IMO. Playing in the Charmin TP bowl will garner us more attention and $ than an fcs championship too- IMO.

Re: Hypothetical
I'm not sure we can say JMU would never win a FBS championship. It is only impossible if JMU stays in the FCS classification.
Would it be unlikely? Yes.
But you can get a dynamic coach, one stud QB, and a few landmark upsets to get you in the mix. FBS playoffs will not be limited to 4 teams in the future so the opportunities should increase.
I would have loved to see the best Boise State teams in a playoff format against the old guard.

Me too!
Since 2006ish can't remember them dropping a game to a "superior" opponent (not referring to Kapernick upset, etc).

Boise State - OU Fiesta Bowl is one of the top sports moments in a long long time.
