World Games a learning experience for Kilpatrick
07/16/13 at 1:20pm by Bill Koch

UC guard Sean Kilpatrick finished the eight-game World University Games competition with averages of 7.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game.

Team USA finished in ninth place after a 97-70 win over Finland on Tuesday in Kazan, Russia. Kilpatrick scored seven points with two rebounds, two steals and two assists in 21 minutes.

The ninth-place finish was the best USA could hope for after failing to qualify for the medal round with a 3-2 record in Pool C.

“I learned if you slow down and have patience with your offense everything will really open up for you,” Kilpatrick said. “Everything isn’t always going to fall for you behind the arc but you can also find ways to either get fouled or even get your teammates involved. That’s what is really most important is making sure everybody on your team is happy and making sure you play the game and that’s what I have learned from this whole experience.”

The win was Team USA’s third in a row to end the competition.

“Like coach said, we know it didn’t really pan out how we wanted it to, but it was a good thing to get these last three games in and go home on a good note,” Kilpatrick said.

most of the games I watched, SK couldnt hit his outside jumper. He missed a couple of layups , but was being heavily guarded. His defense seemed to earn him his playing time. I'm sure the experience will help him alot this next season. It sure didnt hurt Kenyon Martin in his.

Let's hope this experience helped him; I love SK but he was far from a complete player this past season. If he doesn't take it to the basket more for some easy scores and/or free throws this could be a long season. When he's doubled or on the bench with fouls who will pick up his points?

USA basketball needs to up its game. No easy answer on how to better it, though. They're pretty much putting the team together right after school's out, and there is really no time to get a cohesive team together.
