With all that said I think there are two more teams you need to pay attention to and that's South Alabama and Georgia Southern. Sun Belt Conference is going to be thorn the side of others moving forward. Again thanks and best of luck to everyone and their teams.

I think Georgia Southern has real possibilities. They are in a part of Georgia that is football crazy and has lots of talent. They are a decent sized school and all the other schools in Georgia are basically well to the north in the Atlanta metro area (Athens isn't technically Atlanta metro, but its only an hour and 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta). Based on talent Georgia is under-served by Division I schools. Their downside is Statesboro is kind of the middle of nowhere. It would help if they were a little closer to Savannah. Appalachian is in a state that is over-served by Division I schools, even moreso with the talent level in what is basically a basketball state.

Georgia State, unlike Georgia Southern, is just too close to Georgia Tech and UGA, is too much of a commuter school and has to compete too much with the pros and the other metro attractions.

I'd wager that both App and Texas St. win more games their first three years in the Belt than UNT did their last three.

RE: Who has more upside Appalachian State or Texas State
Fans of teams in the SBC, MWC and MAC better get use to the 'crap' fans of schools in CUSA and the new Big East (whatever they are calling themselves),put out because those Conferences have been decimated(just ask the fans of the schools in them that did not find a new home), and CUSA was not that good to began with.

The good thing is fall will roll around again and then we find out who has a good football team, and who does not. That is when these fans have to face reality and look forward to the off season when they can talk bad to fans of good teams based on what conference their team got their butts kicked in.

What else can they do?

RE: Who has more upside Appalachian State or Texas State
Georgia southern has all of the ingredients. The State of Georgia has the best ratio of FBS signees to FBS schools and Ga Southern will be the only team south of Atlanta. We are also located close to Florida and have always recruited well in Central and North FL. Over the last 30 years, Ga Southern has 6 national titles, 8 title game appearances, and 13 semi final appearances. No school including Alabama can match this run. And no, I am not saying we were a better team than Alabama, but against our peers our run is unmatched by 250 other FCS and FBS programs. For comparison, Texas St only made it to the semifinals once.

Available talent, winning tradition, good fan base and a growing enrollment that will soon reach mid 20k.

Sun Belt better get ready for some of this. Right up the gut against the best run D in college football history.

Not sure what you're talking about here. NC has always had a good amount of football talent, just a lot of it ends up going out of state. Also most of the basketball talent at UNC/Duke comes from other places.

Anyway App's location also helps since they are close to the GA, TN, and VA borders. They really aren't confined to exclusively recruiting NC.

1. You are in a much better position to recruit your home state. Just because all the southeast schools recruit Florida (and most of the Midwest as well) doesn't mean that's a strength.
2. NC doesn't have much football talent for a state with its population (#10 in the country). Virginia generates more. Georgia produces a whole lot more in a similar size state.

So NC doesn't produce as much talent as GA, therefore it doesn't produce much talent. I'm not really here to argue the merits of App St. vs. Ga Southern. I just don't agree with your statement.

I think you are making an assumption about the state's talent level based on the relative mediocrity of NC college football teams while UGA's starting runningbacks (Keith Marshall, Todd Gurley) and backup QB (Christian LeMay) are all from NC.

Last year according to Rivals Georgia had 184 signees. Virginia 79. North Carolina 73. The Texas to Florida arc is prime territory. North Carolina is not.

In 2013 Georgia produced 184 FBS signees vs 73 in North Carolina. North Carolina will have 7 FBS programs vs 4 in Georgia. And yes a prospect can choose to sign with an out of state school, but the home schools have an advantage. And yes a program like Boise state with almost 0 signees fom Idaho can still be successful.

GA vs. NC, who really cares. App signed 6 kids from GA in 2012, 8 in 2013 (classes were 14 and 16 respectively), so far three of the seven verbals are from GA all recruited by a GA FBS school.

You guys act like kids don't leave their state.

The Piedmont and mountainous regions of the Carolina's are very poor football recruiting territory, but the coastal Carolina region as well as Virginia Tidewater region to Petersburg/Richmond are outstanding areas.

East Carolina and Old Dominion are in incredible recruiting territories, while Appalachian State has to go to the coastal areas.

Tennessee and Fulmer used to make their living in GA and Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman and Deon Grant led them to a national title. Then Mark Richt came and did a better job of closing the border in GA and Tennessee has struggled ever since. Winning can be done in a poor talent state, but it is always tougher relying on your neighbors.

What a clueless post about App recruiting. Go look at our roster and count the number of recruits east of Raleigh in NC.

"The Yosef Club surpassed the $3 million mark for the first time due in large part a single-month-record $603,300 in donations in April. The single-month record came in the first full month after Appalachian State athletics announced that it accepted an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference and NCAA Division I FBS on July 1, 2014."

FBS already paying off.
