Be fair. The Astros are no where near as popular as the Rockets. Right now I'd put them behind the Dynamo.

Tier 1

Tier 2

-OSU/TTU/Ark/TCU

-Tier 3

Baylor/SMU/UNT

-Tier 4

UTA/DBU

Does not want to admit that UT rules Texas in the number of fans. You know I'm not even joking but I can go to stores in Huntsville, Alabama and find Texas/USC/ND/Ohio State gear.

Of course you can in Huntsville because no one there will admit to being a Bearkat! 03-lmfao

All I can tell you is that UT has not always been #1 in popularity and they are starting to slip again. Not a lot of people wearing burnt orange around Dallas these days but lots of Maroon! 04-cheers

Popularity is when you are winning and both seem to be average at best right now. That is why I put them together. Soccer, is still lower tier when it comes to pro sports.

I still remember when the Pittsburg Pirates meant a lot. I still remember "We are Family" more for them than the hit itself.

1. Ohio State (by a wide mile)
2. Michigan: Definite #2 (also the most disliked, but that just means even more people watch them).
3. Cincinnati: I'll put them as #3, but preface that by saying most fans are also Ohio State fans. That probably sounds strange to someone in Cincinnati, but we aren't rivals and a lot of Ohio State fans like seeing other Ohio teams succeed.
4. Various MAC schools: I'm not going to break this one down further because I wouldn't do it very well. That said, we obviously have a ton of MAC alumni. Even more than with Cincinnati though, most are also Ohio State fans.
5/+ Notre Dame and Other Big Ten schools: Not huge populations, but you see them around on football Saturdays. While numerically smaller, they stand out more than their Ohio school breathen a lot. Less from the western side of the conference (and the eastern side too once we complete expansion). Ranking here is difficult. Michigan State, Penn State, and Notre Dame would probably be the top ones. Know some Indiana/Purdue fans though so think we might get more of those just because of distance than others.

I don't find that strange at all. There are many UC fans down in Cincy who also root for Ohio St (they are just very clear UC is #1). There is not nearly as much hostility between the two schools as is played up.

As far as Cincy goes, I agree with CliftonAve said on the first page. I would switch OSU to #6 and UK to #7, but otherwise I think that's dead on.

RE: Most popular teams in your area
Ohio U has a large following in a lot of places. I was down in Athens during their HC last year (when they were still unbeaten) and the whole town was supporting them. We had to stay in Parkersburg because all rooms in Athens were booked. Even the bagger at the grocery store who doesn't follow sports was following.

There's a lot of OU fans in that part of OH (even though Athens doesn't get all Columbus stations). Also a ton of Reds and Bengals fans, plus with OU getting folks from the entire state there's a good amount of Browns, Indians and Steelers fans. OSU is #2 in Athens itself. Hockey is growing there with Columbus nearby.

You should have added WVU to that list. There's a pretty good contingent of Mountaineer fans in the Pittsburgh area, whether you want to admit it or not. That's why both local papers cover WVU sports...

Fort Worth

1. Cowboys
2. Rangers
3. TCU
4. Texas
5. A&M/OU/Texas Tech
6. Mavericks
7. Baylor/OSU

Interesting note, the University of Texas bookstore has outlets in all of the major cities selling everything Texas Longhorns. Except in
Fort Worth because the store was losing money, they had to divide the store up to half Texas and half TCU merchandise.

The Hawks aren't too far behind, after that you pretty much have everything else under the sun due to the fact that Atlanta is a melting pot of people from all across the southeast.

I think you overrate the Hawks. Their fans are very bandwagon. Lots and lots of empty seats this year.

I haven't lived in the Cincinnati area in a long time, but I would be interested in seeing someone's opinion who wasn't a UC fan. As I recall, his list was pretty accurate except that UC and Xavier seem over-rated. They would be below Ohio St., but all would be below HS football.
