Landon Root cited the coaches, location, last season's trip to the Orange Bowl and a perfect offense for his skill set.

The kid is smart (not just because he verbally committed to NIU). I think there is a good chance, more than most of you think, that he signs come February.

+1. He sees the potential here. He will have a legit chance to start here somewhere down the road and WIN.

Unlikely but who knows if he would be good enough to start in 2014.

It'd be nice to have another QB that starts 4 years!

I'd be very surprised to have someone who isn't McIntosh, Hare, or Williams starting next year. Even if this kid is really talented I would think that the coaching staff would feel more comfortable with someone who knows the playbook. I think the best bet for him to see the field next season is if he is an incredible runner like Lynch. Then I think they would maybe do a two QB system. But who knows. I look forward to seeing what he can do.

Woot! Root looks like a big-time talent. Good looking game tape on Hudl. NIU been spoiled by Harnish and Lynch so we need a kid like this to keep it up.

DeKalb is home to one of the best football programs in the country and some of you girls need to remember that. 34 wins in 3 years..... Good times.

Are we taking perhaps 2 QB's in this class since we didn't take any last year, or is this guy our QB of the future?

Sherfield just picked up a Purdue offer and said they have moved to the top of his list...

Purdue is in a world of hurt at QB, they will be starting a 6th year senior who lost most of 2years to injury. Have no other experienced QB's on the roster so this guy may get early PT. On the other hand it is Purdue who has been mediocre to awful in football since Drew Breese left. Hope the Huskies beat the Boilers again, I remember the last win and Purdue thugged it up at the end of that game.

I thought Purdue was starting highly touted true freshman Etling this season

The post about Purdue's QBs is wrong. Marve graduated and is gone and they have a QB returning (Rob Henry) who is, in fact, experienced, although he was hurt last year. Etling is probably the most talented kid on their roster but I don't know if they'll actually start him at the beginning of the year.

Also, to clarify, Trent Sherfield isn't going to be a QB in college and he's not being recruited as one.

If he was really that smart he would go to Harvard. Not trying to take away anything from the education one gets at NIU but most players don't make the NFL and a Harvard degree will in general get more doors opened(and for the most part $$$) for you after your playing career is over.

I agree. The kid seems very smart. Made a good choice. and I am saying that in an unbiased way.

Its all about perspective, it appears he values football and location more so. He puts himself in a good position to showcase his talent, near his hometown, while still getting a quality education.

Not saying that may not be true but they do have 6th yr senior Rob Henry on the roster, if he is healthy I have a hard time believing even a brand new HC who had recruiting Etling would start a true Frosh over a 6th year senior. But if Etling does start the Huskie D should have a field day, extremely tough for a true Frosh to start at QB for any D1 program and win.

This is the first player I can remember that has been offered by NIU and an Ivy League program who has chosen NIU. Great get, don't discount Harnish sticking on an NFL team and the success of Jordan Lynch being key factors in his decision to choose NIU.

He can always go after a Masters to further his education as well. Also great to get a signing from Kansas, a state that NIU has worked hard to make inroads into.

I thought Tyler Loos got a scholarship from an Ivy League school too.

EDIT: Actually I am wrong he did not. I checked his Rivals page.

They don't give athletic scholarships in the Ivy League, which is kind of a big deal when tuition is $40k.
