let's not forget, Heineken had NO offers. From ANYone until ODU came in.

He turned out ok.

at the QB position, I'd take smarts over a cannon arm any day. If the kid got an offer from Yale, he must have the smarts.

GRR...I hate when people post this fallacy. Sounds like something ODU created to add to the legend.

Anyway, he had offers from ODU, UR, GSU, and others...ODU was first to offer though.

ok, you need to step away from the computer if you are hating on posts :)

point is the same - he was vastly under recruited and had little interest during the meat of the recruiting season, and turned into a great player. So you never know.

my "hate" stems from hearing that crap on TV for the last 2 years. TV crews don't bother to do any research at the FCS level.

the thing is, the rest of the talent on ODU is not that great. certainly not to the level of other top FCS teams. but he is so good he has elevated that program.

they really should just go ahead and put up a statue of him outside the Great Clamshell when he graduates. Because his impact on the program has been that great.

was really a fortunate find for ODU.

Also was recruited by newsome, so you think it'd be for the line.

The dnr says (4x) kid is very, very, very, very smart. He turned down a free ride at Yale. I'm assuming Ivy football is a full ride. Gotta have big dreams to ride the bench behind a soph qb at JMU.

Ivy league doesn't allow Athletic Scholarships... They provide Athletes with academic scholarships with some leeway.

Technically the Ivy doesn't provide scholarships but it's really a matter of semantics. They basically provide the financial aid to make school free. Had a friend back in the day who was a pitcher at Princeton and he wasn't technically on scholarship but I don't think he paid for anything except a meal plan.

Back in winter 2010 when Henry Hunter's youtube highlight video was posted on the Zone people were comparing him to Landers.

Back in winter 2010 when Jace Edwards HS youtube highlight video was posted on the Zone people were comparing him to Rascatti.

Last yr people were gushing over Ian Edwards HS highlight video, insisting he was going to be a great QB at JMU. And he has been moved to tightend.

I would put little stock into a HS youtube highlight video. Just saying.

Sorry, I don't agree with your point, weak as it is.

HS highlight videotape is pretty much what fans have to go by, and many coaches as well when recruiting out of state.

As for your examples...I don't think anyone has made a case that O'Conor is the second coming of anyone. The fact Hunter got homesick (and never went to class), Edwards felt he got recruited over and transferred out, and Edwards' big body projects to be more productive playing another position doesn't mean they couldn't play QB, or weren't good athletes. Indeed, Edwards proved he could play the position, and HS QBs are often recruited simply because they are good athletes. O'Conor looks legit as a player at QB...he's got a good touch on the ball...but who really knows what's in his heart and head, or if he'll project better in another role?

RE: New QB - Lukas O'Conor
Not many people listen to me on here, but BDK just made one of the more valid points I've seen on here in a long time.

I won't claim to be involved with football coaching at any level. I am, however, responsible for several dozen young men and women playing college volleyball across the country over the last several years. I've coached at a high school and national club level. I've also been heavily involved in assisting kids with recruiting.

One of the first thing most college (volleyball) coaches say is "highlight videos are nice, but I want to see uncut game footage". Kids are put on a recruiting list because coaches know they can make incredible plays. Coaches don't need to see that as much as they need to see how they react when they mess up, or how they perform when the team isn't playing well, or how they do over a period of time. Highlight videos (for any sport) or rampant on youtube because they are usually <=10 minutes and easy to upload. Uncut game footage is where judgement should be (and usually is) made.

Not discounting this kid by any means, I like him too. But BDK made a great point and just wanted to give me two cents.

A coach who can't scout a player in person (after having been enticed by some type of recommendation...either from a source they trust or by a snippet of video) may indeed ask to see "uncut game footage"...but coaches are not going to sit through the video of an entire game just to see the play of a single player. So, let's be clear that by "uncut" we're talking about ALL of the plays on video by a particular recruit. That said, you can still tell a substantial amount about a player's ability from his or her highlight reel, especially one as visible as a QB. How is their footwork? What does their release look like? Can they make the out pass to the sideline? Do their passes exhibit touch, or are all their throws rockets without a governor? Can they run, and how do they react to pressure in the pocket? Etc., etc.

I don't know a darn thing about volleyball or what you look for in a recruit, but I can tell you a heck of a lot about a QB's physical ability from 10 minutes of video, even if it's select "highlights"...the rest of the recruiting decision...the attributes of personality and academics is a judgement call best made face-to-face.

Right Longhorn, but aren't you a fan, not a football recruiter? I think that's the point being made.
