As I recall, that early-morning start was for a regular-season series that got moved to the Astrodome due to bad weather. For the 1999 super-regional, I think the reason we were able to bid the Astrodome as host site was that the Astros were out of town.

That was UNLV, and I think it was circa 1996-1997. I believe that this was the first post-season game(s) that Rice had ever hosted (I think there was some possibility of Rice hosting an SWC tourney in the late 1980s, IIRC, but I don't think Rice reached the tourney).
