ESPN3/WatchESPN coverage blacked out?
So I notice that on the WatchESPN/ESPN3 site is says that our game (and the two other afternoon games) is blacked out nationwide on ESPN3. Anybody know if this is actually true? Does this mean they will also be blacked out on my WatchESPN app on iPad? If so, I need to find someplace in north Alabama that will show the game.

Game is being shown on broadcast channel. I think that usually means it will be blacked out.

I don't think you should have a problem getting the game on a TV in a sports bar like BWW, even in north Alabama. (I lived in HSV for 16 years.) No sound most likely, but better than nothing.

The most recent post from Rice Athletics (at 9:00am) says "This afternoon's game will be shown nationally on ESPN 2 and also avaiable through the Watch ESPN app http://espn.go.com/watchespn/blackout?id=951204 "

I infer from that the game will be available via the app, but not on the watchespn website.

Wow I didn't know we had such a strong owl presence in north Alabama! I was born and raised in HSV. And yes last I checked (when i was back 2 weeks ago) every bar still has ESPN2

ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app are different things.

ESPN3 is their internet "channel", which carries games not available on one of their broadcast networks. The WatchESPN app is an iPad/iPhone product which allows you to watch games across all of their networks - if your TV provider has a deal with them.

Several major cable operators now do, but DirecTV and Dish do not.

Hope this helps.

RE: ESPN3/WatchESPN coverage blacked out?
Yeah...Was planning on watching it somewhere if the WatchESPN wasn't an option. Just prefer to mirror it to the TV at home unless there are some other people to go to BWW (or wherever) and watch together. Otherwise I'm the lone crazed fan cheering for a team no one else really cares about.

Didn't realize there was such a prominent HSV presence on the board, although I did know a couple of folks from HSV when I was at Rice (Hanszen '06)...little did I know I'd end up living here.

Further clarification from Chuck Pool:

"The game will be available to those of you with the Watch ESPN app, but it will not be available on ESPN 3. http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index#type/upcoming/ (this is the link for upcoming events, if you are looking for the link at game time, be sure to click on the “live now” tab."

We're on ESPN2. Could be some problems at start time 1:00 game on ESPN2, MissSt-Va goes longer than 3 hours.

If a prior game runs long, they typically will put the start on ESPN3 or ESPNNews.

Most like ESPNews then. Chuck Pool said there would be no ESPN3 today.

I think he meant no ESPN3 for full game coverage - they tend to use it for overflow situations. Hopefully its a non-issue.

Walt, the issue being discussed is what happens if the early game on ESPN2 goes over 3 hours.

The start of Louisville/Vanderbilt will be on ESPNNews until UNC/USC ends - so there's our answer.

Of course with UNC/SoCar tied at 5, we may be worried about where they'll put us if Louisville/Vandy are still playing on ESPNews in another hour.

Yep. That threat is creeping in. Think we're in an ESPN3 situation then.

Espn news is back to news, so they should be clear to have the Owls on at the top of the hour.

And our game was on ESPN2 for most of the contest - in fact, we bumped LSU/OU to ESPNews for the first inning. Take that BCS!!
