RE: Nick Mayers
You start retiring numbers based on anyone other than TH's stats, and your going to run out of numbers really quick. I vote for cooling it on the retired jersey talk...

RE: Nick Mayers
I don't know if the statistics put up by any of our players to this point, aside from Heinicke warrant retiring jersey numbers. I guess it depends on what criteria you base retiring a jersey. I do think Mayers, DeMarco, Wilkins, and others were great players and should always be remembered as such.
I think that since ODU is nearing the design phase of a new stadium/renovation, that there should be a statue erected on the stadium grounds that honors the players who commited to being the Foundation of Monarch Football while the program was nothing more than a blueprint. Those young men played a very important role in propelling ODU football to the level we are now. ODU is on the doorstep of FBS football thanks in large part to their commitment and it would be a suitable gesture to honor all of those young men as a unit who represent Monarch Spirit at it's best.

RE: Nick Mayers
It's tough to retire numbers in football, as certain positions have certain requirements (is that the case in college too?). So, retiring numbers can't be because a guy had a really good career here.
But they can do some kind of wall of fame type of thing for those guys (Mayers, Wilkins, Cameron, Plisko, etc.) and the retired numbers can go to the once a decade type players.

I'm with ya. I'm thinkin 20 yr anniversary. Admire. respect, and am so proud of the performance of all that excel in our formative years, but would like to see the retirement ceremonies come later on as these players are adults and can bask in the glory of their youth with friends and family. Not to mention the early jersey number attrition.
note;all good thoughts and opinions. proud to be a part of the Monarch Nation.

Neither were on the 09 team, so they wouldn't be lumped in with those guys. However, you act as if they couldn't transfer to other schools.
My point was that they did not take a chance on a total unknown like DeMarco, Mayers, and Wilkins. And my thought is that they landed at ODU because they knew each other from Hofstra, and Mayo had ties to the area and he brought Cameron with him. Maybe they saw ODU as the best opportunity for themselves to get immediate playing time. If Hofstra had not folded, they likely wouldn't have transferred anywhere in FCS due to having to sit a year. Trust me, I'm as happy as anybody that they did because they both did a lot for our team. Not exactly sure why we are talking about this, but thanks for reading something into my post that wasn't there....

RE: Nick Mayers
I like the circle of fame idea and only retire truly household name great players.... people who break NCAA records, or get drafted, etc.
We could also have a "Famous Founder's" attribution to those guys that stood up and became the best startup program ever..... none of those guys are going to light it up in the NFL, but a subset of recognition would be nice. Maybe a plaque with their name and they get a "Cornerstone Brick" from the old Foreman Field facility
