Quote:Gene Stephenson has been fired as head baseball coach at Wichita State after a 36-year career.
Athletics director Eric Sexton announced the decision Tuesday, saying it was the ''proper time to move into a new phase of Shocker baseball.''

Why didn't they let him play out the last year on his contract. Let him go out on that and a retirement tour.

This is disgraceful. Stephenson IS Wichita State baseball. And they expect us to believe that they couldn't have handled this in a more dignified way? Their basketball success must be going to their heads.

Who the hell is Wichita State, anyway? A nothing school; absolute joke.

Crazy move. What established coach would choose to go there?

I don't know if it's that crazy. He built that program, but he's also damaged it with off-the-field issues over the years (the OU job, the stalking incident, team discipline issues).

I bet you they get some good candidates. They're keeping Stephenson's long time assistant on staff, which indicates to me that there might be something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

That's a great program - great ballpark, great fan support and even though Kansas State and Missouri have greatly improved the last few years, it's still the only program around when it comes to baseball. And their basketball success clearly shows that the school is viable, despite not being in a marquee conference.

I bet you we'll see some other marquee coaching names under the gun this offseason as well (like Jim Morris of Miami - I would add Augie Garrido but Deloss Dodds just doesn't seem like he's ever willing to make coaching moves).

Ten years ago this statement would make me real nervous, but these days there are younger (by which I mean not on Medicare yet) guys who are hotter commodities.

I wonder if A&M folks are wishing they had hired Coach Graham when they hired Rob Childress - he's another one who could be under the gun although I suspect he is fine for now.

How about Notre Dame - they have a young coach who has only been there three years, but three very average years at best. If both Biggio boys end up there next year, I wonder if they could convince Craig Biggio to be the head coach?

I think they wanted to talk with Wayne, and Wayne said he would have talked with them but didn't want to leave Rice. Bobby came up with a raise and extension and the rest is history.

Don't forget that if Childress doesn't work out, then the Aggies would say "I wonder if we had hired ..." and fill in the blank with about 40 of the top coaches in the country. Byrner talked to such a large number of candidates that it was comical.
