Like Sam Hurd, right?

Hurd's problem started well after he left the Huskies

We all assume
Hurd was suspended multiple times at NIU, no?

Come on now, if you're going to believe he was an angel at NIU at then became a drug lord, you're very gullible.

I can easily check that, but I don't think that is the case.

With that being said, those that think Novak only took angels are deeply mistaken. Ivory Bryant is the first name that comes to my mind in that category....

He and Powers were suspended for the start of the Silicon Valley No Power Thunderstorm Classic for sure.

I can just about guarantee he was up to no good at NIU too.

I get the point of not wanting somebody with character concerns, but don't act like Novak had a bunch of choir boys.

You are always going to have some issues when dealing with over 100 18 - 23 year olds. I do believe that coach Novak tried his best to minimize that by selecting for character as well as athleticism.

When he did have issues with a player he was pretty strict sitting people for missing study hall and making kids sit out a quarter or two that were late for busses or planes.

I cannot believe that he would have anything to do with this former Buckeye and in my opinion coach Carey should not either.

I would take a chance on the kid. It looks like his transgressions break down as: (1) Enough stupid things to make Urban Meyer kick him off the team after one year; (2) Drunk and disorderly in Bowling Green. Not condoning them but I've seen worse - we're looking at you Lawrence Phillips. These would be fatal for most players but a fact of life is that talented players get more chances than others. He is clearly immature and it would have to be made known to him that he was coming here on strike 2 and a half. He would basically be on parole within our program and if he can't cut it he's gone.

Not being an angel is one thing, but to do what this guy is doing trying to barge into stranger's houses to do lord knows what, yikes, I dont want this guy on the streets let alone on a football team.

If Toledo took this kid you guys would be throwing mud all day! Another problem is that you send a message to the team that, if they screw up, they should be cut a break too. Bringing a kid in like this is a big risk, sends a message, and can be the opening of Pandoras box to creating a self fullfiling prophecy of excuse making and rule bending. This kid lacks critical thinking skiils. Some sort of brain issue didnt stop him from tackling Brutus, which what would we say if it broke his neck and paralized the student inside? This kid didnt have the brain power to stop what happened at BGSU. Maybe his thinking skills are underdeveloped? There has to be even more to it for OSU to let go. If you want someone that doesnt have the ability to think critically on their feet at NIU then this is your guy.

Only way we go after this guy is if he stops tackling mascots and starts tackling opposing teams' marching band members.

Oh for sure. I won't disagree with anyone who doesn't want him because of character concerns. I was just saying to act like Novak only had high character guys is wrong. Two different arguments.

I would still take him.

Meh. I wouldn't go that far. Womble and Progar both got DUIs. Womble was bad so he got kicked off the team, Progar was good so he got suspended a game. Talent buys you chances.

As part of their spring game, they ran a play with the mascot only the guy in the costume didn't see the hit coming and he got quite flattened.

There's a grand canyon between choir boys and this thug. Perhaps some players showed their true colors later on, but you can rest assured Novak did not rebuild the program by knowingly taking anyone close to having a police record like this fool. bikechuck is also correct when he says Novak was strict in dealing with anyone they found violating team rules.
I want Northern Illinois to win, period, but if all of you who think it's worth admitting someone like this to the program just to win become the majority, then I'm going to stop being a Huskie fan.
You can never know in advance how someone is going to change for the better or the worse, but you have to start with some principles when it comes to character. As MaddDawgz02 put it, would you want this guy showing up at your house on a Saturday morning. If you think that's worth some wins 7, how about we share your home address with him. And as for 2012NIUAccy, YES, you turn this guy down!!!! Who gives a crap if Rivals has him second in the state for his position. Since when do these recruiting service player ratings come with any kind of guarantee? With all the success NIU has enjoyed going to consecutive bowl games, winning seasons, etc., you want to tell me how those things were possible when we didn't have a guy ranked by Rivals? Come on guys, success at any cost is not the kind of program we want.

Hahahaha. If you guys think NIU is dominating the MAC by being a completely clean program you are out of your mind. Every successful college athletics program is walking a fine line.

Stop with the high and mighty talk, please.

I agree with 7..........college kids get in trouble.....they drink and get in more trouble....this was not so much a crime of sociopathy as some brain cramp due to the effects of substances and/or emotional problems. if the motive was to deprive someone of their hard earned stuff or to intentionally hurt someone, I would be with the holier than thou posters....however, before casting this kid (and his talent) aside, I would need to know much more about his background, history of rule abiding or rule breaking and his motives. What do past coaches/teachers say about him? what, if anything, is in his police blotter........if he comes up relatively clean for a typical football player, I would take him.........

He was charged with all misdemeanors.

Don't we have a linebacker who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of some sort of assault ? In the same area too for that matter. Not saying the two are comparable, but not everything is always as it seems.

There is a big big big difference between the typical thing college kids get in trouble and what this kid did @ Bowling Green. I understand the whole thing talent gives you chances, but he has done nothing to prove he is worth that risk. He would have to walk on water talent wise to take a chance on a guy with this criminal history.
