RE: Sad day for Tiger Nation!!!!!!!
I spent MANY days and nights at Silky's before and after Tiger basketball games and thanks to him, I missed A LOT of early morning classes in college. Silky loved the Tigers!!!

We decided to drink at his place in New Orleans after the parade before the first New Orlean's Bowl. While we were sitting at our table, an older women working at Silky's was having a hard time pulling a keg to another part of the bar. I walked over and helped her move it. A few minutes later, she and Silky walked over to our table and told us drinks for the night were on them!!! That was just one of the great moments we had during that bowl week.

He was a great man and he loved his customers!!!

I heard Katrina nearly killed him financially but he recovered. He had to be pretty old.

I send my condolences to his family.

I enjoyed many hours at his establishment and lost more brain cells there than I care to count.

I remember when Silky's first opened in Overton Square.
They served the Divers in a real Divers Helmet. Turned it upside down with a plastic liner. Everyone thought they were so cool that they were all stolen. That's when he started serving them in a paint can. That place was happening in the 70's. Also loved the giant oak tree growing in the middle of the bar and out the top of the building.

I asked him about his place in New Orleans not too long after Katrina, he said, "You know I sold that place just before that Hurricane hit." He could've been just messin' with me. But, I thought that to be the case.

RE: Sad day for Tiger Nation!!!!!!!
As many of you know, I have been playing at his bar for a number of years. This is, indeed, a sad day for the city of Memphis. Silky was larger than life and ushered us into adulthood with his bars on Beale and Overton Square. Whether a paint bucket or the bright yellow ones they use now, everyone has had a Diver at some point in their life, lol. He had been ill for quite a while and still this is very unexpected. I don't think this changes anything for employees and patrons. Now, he will look down, chomp on his cigar and smile at everyone having a good time in his place. RIP, big guy. Thanks for everyone that you gave to Memphis.

RE: Sad day for Tiger Nation!!!!!!!
My father-in-law went to school with him and proclaims to have given him the nickname "Silky". My in-laws used to throw a lot of parties at their house and Silky would show up every now and then. He was a pretty nice guy. Sad day for the city and for Beale Street. I hope they have a huge funeral procession (New Orleans style) down Beale Street in his honor.

I always meet my tailgate group before and after Forum games at Silky's. I loved seeing him sitting outside greeting everyone on his "throne chair." He had a smile for everyone.

It is a sad day in Memphis. He was a living legend, certainly one-of-a-kind, a great showman and Memphian.
