RE: ESPN feels confident Birmingham's bowl will stay tied to SEC
At the end of the day it is a good event for Birmingham to host, I just wish we had a better facility to have it played in. Events like the bowl, Indy Car, SEC Baseball Tournament, NCAA College Cup, and the Champions Tour have a great economic impact on the city. I agreed with Mayor Bell(imagine that...) when he talked about Birmingham being a great venue for events. We need to continue to host events, I'd love for Birmingham to host the CUSA Basketball tourney and I just wish the city's leadership would wake up and proactively pursue it. If some of these events involve the SEC then so be it. Put away your bias against the conference and realize that their fans are coming into our city and spending their dollars in our hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. The pros highly outweigh the cons.

If you read the articles about the recent annual SEC payout to member schools, you will quickly realize the level of bid it would probably take to get SEC attention to B'ham. I believe the City Council (which would actually have to come up with the money for any bid) would likely choke on the required amount. Being able to come up with the money to bid for any C-USA tournament, since it would involve a TRULY local team, is more likely.

Now, IF we had the originally planned full sized MPF with its full sized Entertainment district to bid with, it might be a different story.

Just so you don't hold your breath until then. I think the western campus will accept almost ANY bowl over coming back to B'ham. They don't even come to B'ham to board flights to bowl games anymore.

It makes you wonder what would have happened if the April 27th tornado had struck Bryant Denny and caused major damage. If Bama had to play some home games at an alternate venue where would/could they go?

Good question! I can't think of any where else they could have gone under the circumstances.

I suspect that the entire state would have stopped operating if that's what it took until B-D was repaired and back in service for the upcoming season. The "millions for football, thousands for academic schools" is what Alabama is really all about.

Hoover has hosted the SeC baseball tournament, I'm sure Birmingham can afford it.
The money promised to schools does not come solely from the money guaranteed by the city. Most of it comes from TV.

Many child support payments, tattoos, insurance premiums, immunizations, and tithing would have been missed.

Check that on the tithing. It would skyrocket until the holy sanctuary was once again whole.
