RE: SWAC Championship Leaving Birmingham and Legion Field
If you were on the board of another school would you willingly tie your biggest game to the chance UAB's getting a new stadium anytime soon? Especially given our BoT's history in this regard?
Your big donors would think you'd gone loony if you so much as proposed it.

That AD has been fired for almost a year.

With new, up to date concessions and restrooms, it would answer all the complaints we have listed about the current facility. Add in elevators and escalators to replace the ramps for those with limited walking capabilities, it would be the perfect venue for another century. How would this cost compare to just building the MAPS concept in the first place?
Pardon my cluelessness, "BNBF",but, the city's found the $$$ for Regions Field and the CrossPlex. Why are they acting so when it comes to finding the resources for a NEW football stadium. UAB's not getting an OCS anytime soon, and no way that bowl game survives having to play where it is now, I don't care how much they try to disguise or dress it up. Legion Field should be cut down to nothing & a new football stadium erected in general proximity of the baseball park. But, they're determined (polite euphemism for absolute denial) to validate the existence of the old gray monstrosity on Graymont. But, that's just me! Time for "Lesion" Field to go....
good question!
I just don't get it, "Hornet"...It's almost as if someone who could have done something about this is just going along with the status quo where improving the football climate is concerned, hoping the other accomplishments will provide an effective distraction. Really makes me wonder who's really in charge of this city...

Both of ya's!!!! They'll probably paint some murals around the place next. Plants some flowers and trees around the dining table area. Have you ever seen anything like that in a football stadium? Dining tables in the end zone? Almost hilarious...

Troy is also about to expand and they have never filled their stadium. They are also adding boxes along with a field house in their open end zone.
What building such luxury end zone skyboxes illustrates is that schools realize that few of the renters of such facilities really know (or care) enough about football techniques (blocking angles and play development) to appreciate the end zone view of the field. They simply want to enjoy the exclusivity of the box, along with its food & drink provisions, while watching the game, complete with instant replays, on large HD TVs inside their box. They can brag to their contemporaries about "being at the game" without necessarily ever actually looking out the windows at the actual event.

For most fans, this is very true. Keep in mind though that there is always an end zone camera at every game to give the coaches really valuable information on how their team is performing. Most fans though don't have the skill set to appreciate that viewing angle. That is why 50 yd line seats have greater value than end zone seats when tickets (and access premiums) are sold.

I know enough about football to know that end zone seats suck.

RE: SWAC Championship Leaving Birmingham and Legion Field
I'll to what y'all said about end zone seats. Last time I sat in a section of that nature was at the Georgia Dome...Falcons - Seahawks...Falcons lost in OT. Love that arena, but I was not fond of those seats, but they were all I could get on short notice.
And yes, I paid for the tickets! Probing my dwindling memory banks, I cannot recall at any time in my life having sat in the end zone seats at "Lesion" Field.

During one of our Bye weeks a few of my teammates and I went to Tuscaloosa for the Bama/LSU game in 05. Bad decision! We got student tickets and sat in the student section and as soon as LSU won it in out, folks started to throw stuff on to the field. Due to the fact that we were sitting near the bottom, when the idiots threw cups the crap fell out on the folks sitting below. I was ready to kick some arse after that.
My other bad end zone experience was during the Alabama A&M/Grambling game at Legion Field a few years back. My wife was on the dance line while she was at AAMU so she likes sitting in the end zone down on the north end zone near where the bands sit. In the HBCU world those seats are always for the "band heads". We're sitting down watching the game (at least I was) and darn near every person down there was standing with a camera phone, or camcorder turned towards the band. Nobody paid too much attention to what was happening on the field. These mofos were talking about song selections and which band was winning the stand battle I felt so out of place.

Legion Field used to have wooden bleacher type seats below the north end zone seats for nonrevenue alumni. I was just finished with my MA from UAB and my wife's BA, both degrees in education which took about all of what my circa $5,000 per year salary would cover. They were designated west to east as sections X, Y, and Z. In 1972, I was in section X when AU blocked those two UA punts and ran them into the north end zone to win 17-16, a score that will live in "Crimson infamy". In AU's terms, it will always be the "Punt, Bama, Punt" game (called for AU on radio by UAB's own Gary Sanders).
Trivia note - the Bama punter Greg Gantt and the AU DB David Langner who ran both blocked punts in for TDs, were Woodlawn HS teammates in 1969 and appear next to each other in the composite football team senior's picture at Woodlawn.
