11 man rotation?
With us having 3 seniors in the backcourt and now a what looks like a 4 man rotation in the post, how many minutes are King, Iverson, M. Crawford and Wilson gonna get?
There's no way we have an 11 man rotation. I would love for us to run the hell out of people and rotate 10 guys, but that hasn't been Joh's style up to this point.
I'm interested to hear others thoughts. Dangit I wish Midnight Madness was tomorrow night. I can't wait to see this group play!!

RE: 11 man rotation?
Should make for some awesome competition in early practice.......hope JP sees the light of a 40 minutes of hell defensive style & uses all 11. And hope all 11 are as good as advertised.

RE: 11 man rotation?
In all fairness, unfair expectations will be heaped upon a few. Bottom line is most tourney successful schools run about 7 or 8 players max, meaning if Memphis truly is 11 deep, 3 or 4 kids may be butthurt and massaging egos will be a very important role of the staff.
I would hope that JJ plays 30 mpg, Gerron 28, Chris 28, Shaq 28 and Pellom 25. That only leaves 61 minutes to be shared among King, Iverson, Markel, Pookie, Austin, Damien and Woodson--(not to mention Sam Craft) or a litle more than 8 mins per if spread evenly. Can't really break out on the stat line playing 4 mins a half.
As long as the kids are all in, it's good.

Pookie and Markel will struggle for minutes.
Wilson, King or one of the bigs may as well.

Markel will be a surprise. There were some on the coaching staff that said he was the best player we recruited for 2013 period.

RE: 11 man rotation?
It's possible to have a larger rotation than Pastner has previously employed, if you have the horses. He has said in interviews in the past few weeks that he plans to use a 1-4 offense, and run and press a lot more than in the past. But that was before we got Pellom and Woodson.
Nice to have options. It might take a few games, but I'm sure the staff will figure it out. Might even deploy different strategies (big vs. small ball), depending on the opponent.

I hope so.
Even if he is though there are still 3 very good seniors in front of him.

RE: 11 man rotation?
These things will always work out because inevitably a few players won't end up being quite the superstars that we all hope they will be in their first year. We sit here and look at rankings and youtube highlight reels and assume that every player coming in is going to be an all-american candidate, but it's not a realistic portrayal of reality.
We have a good mix of 4 year players and players who have a chance to play in the NBA sooner coming in. The 4 year players aren't as likely to be major contributors off the bat in every case. We also have a transfer that was a solid rotation player at a mid-major school.
These guys will battle it out in practice for a right to earn minutes. Some will exceed expectations, some will meet expectations, and some will fail to meet expectations right away. Pastner will put the best players on the floor that give us the best chance to win. It will probably end up being a 7-9 player rotation as always.

RE: 11 man rotation?
My best guess is it stays primarily an 8 man rotation:
Joe, Chris, Geron get about 30 minutes per game.
Shaq gets about 25 per game.
Pellom and Austin get about 20 per game.
2 of Wilson/King/Iverson will get most of the remaining 45 minutes.
Woodson is situational when we need a big body/extra fouls.
Pookie and Markel are going to have to be opportunistic as freshman and take advantage of the minutes they get due to injuries/foul trouble.

You omitted Nichols, the highest ranked player in our recruiting class.

indeed
Gonna be interesting to see who get more minutes between Shaq, Woodson and Nichols. I'm assuming Pellom will get his.
I'd like to see all three share the load in a rotation.

King is gonna be hard to keep out of the lineup. A lot of folks are selling him short.

We know Pastner wants to play an uptempo style. He will employ as many players as necessary, in his judgement, that will most likely result in victories. In other words, I think he will use ten players if ten players works best.
It is a nice problem to overcome.

RE: 11 man rotation?
We don't know who will struggle for minutes. Remember AB's first year? he was a throw-in not in the top 150 that we still couldn't keep off the floor in his first year due to his hustle and "want to."
That could be Pookie or Markel this year.
Basically, we KNOW that Joe, Chris, Geron, and Shaq will get their (most likely starter's) minutes.
All the rest is up for grabs.
Pellom, Woodson, Wilson, Nichols, Powell, King, Iverson, and Crawford will be competing for the other 3-5 spots.
My hunch is that Nichols and Iverson (provided he qualifies) will be high in the mix for rotation minutes due to their projected talent. Pellom has D1 experience in his favor, and a third big in the regular rotation will be important. Any of those 3 could disappoint OR exceed expectations as well.
That makes 7.
Woodson has size. If he's a banger who can board, there will be a place for him. King has extreme skill as well and is very talented... he's another that could easily step up into a major rotation position. Powell has speed and skills. I suspect he'll take a backseat this year, but there could be some backup PG minutes for him if things break right (and assuming he qualifies). Wilson has a year of experience in the program and showed some flashes last year and some hustle. Crawford is not as highly rated but many on the staff were high on him, so we might be surprised.
Basically, after those first 4-6 guys, there are a lot who will legitimately contend for a rotation spot. We'll see who proves themselves and who ends up having to wait their turn. The intense competition for minutes will be good for everyone.
