Agree. And if memory serves, most of this on Gilbert came out way after the fact. With Cal, it was happening while he was still coaching. Not to mention the proliferation of PCs, social media, etc. in Cal's era.

I say Cal, but I do agree with AAA that the fact we are even having this discussion is fantastic.

The thing is that Pastner has some growth years still, this discussion could shift in later years.

RE: Best recruiter in tiger hoops history?
To those who say Cal inherited a mess; sure. Let's be fair, though. Pastner's first three years of recruiting were done while Memphis was on probation BECAUSE of Cal.

That said, Cal did get players, even if some of them were landed in less than above the board fashions.

Something to remember about Finch, though, when it came to landing players. Before he landed his own, he was the lead recruiter for Kirk. Andre Turner once claimed he was all set to go to Auburn before a visit from Finch.

I agree with TripleA....and this is why I so consistenly defend Josh Pastner. In April 2009 the majority of people on this board thought Memphis basketball was about to slip back into mediocrity. I was confident at the time that the boosters would get a 'name' until I heard that RC had jumped into the fray. Has this program been where it was in 2007? No. Has it still been successful and improved each season under Pastner? Absofreakinglutely.

Waiting on Pastner's dominant player.

You left out Elliott Perry and Sylvester Gray.

Cal was the best recruiter. What's he's doing at Kentucky is another level but he did it a Memphis too.

Pastner is the best recruiting services recruiter because of all the players reps he gets to campus. But Cal recruited game changers.

with all of the great players that Josh has recruited i think it is safe to say that it is time to win big, especially since we have some really really solid players returning. time to go to the elite 8.

I'm guessing on the rankings from 2000-2004 and I'm probably leaving one or two of Cal's guys out.

Add a couple of solid "almosts" to Pastner too. Latavious Williams (remember him?) and of course Jelan Kendrick. Even though they didn't end up here, they were still solid 5 star commitments.

That's why I didn't list Pookie, Williams, Perkins, Qyntel, etc. Stoudemire decommitted, so he wouldn't have made the list either way.

to jumpstart the Memphis program the way he needed to...Cal had to take chances on guys who might have had questionable characters.
I am long since thankful we no longer need to recruit those kind of folks.

RE: Best recruiter in tiger hoops history?
This is stupid. Calipari coached here. He is the best recruiter in the game, if not of all time. Josh is a damn good recruiter and one of the best in the business. He might one day surpass Cal. He has a had a better start, for sure. But recruiting is about getting players and nobody does that like Calipari.

Read the thread title. We're talking about in TIGER history, not in UK history.
