Well, I think that the potential to incite another drunken riot after Springfest is the bigger reason to "make an example" of him, rather than his status as a MBB player. I don't think Harrisonburg has any tolerance for that sort of behavior after Springfest.

Probably true brizzock, but the attention that comes with an athlete's arrest has a greater public impact than some random student.

The only thing I can figure about delaying the arrest is it might have been the better decision that night. Let's face it, this ain' exactly the Swat team or Navy Seal time. Ray's a BIG guy and one, even two cops, could have their hands full if he's truly on an alcohol fueled roll. Pure conjecture on my part, they didn't want to escalate an already obviously volatile situation.

Who knows, I just happen to think 20 days for a drunk and disorderly, including the suspended additional 280 days seems like a LOT.

Found guilty of two misdemeanors. And he gets 20 days in jail, I find it way harsh unless Rayshawn had a prior record.

DNR actually said it was a year in jail (360 days) with 340 of the days suspended.

Can anyone get access to the court documents/transcript? There has to be some more to this story.

Judge Claybrook of Tick law school said "Defendant had an opportunity to show leadership and be a role model" but failed. ( Athlete bias if you ask me)

An officer testified that Goins said "if the police touch me, I will knock them out". Defense attorney Moyers said Rayshawn was talking in general and not making direct threats.

Assistant commonwealth attorney Cline said "Goins put officers in danger". (he put them in so much danger that they arrested him 21 hours later)

Before sentencing Rayshawn apologized by saying his actions were really inappropriate

Not to be too contrary, but I imagine those were not Goins exact words. I would think Goins exact words are pretty important in determining if a police officer was threatened. Obviously, he should have kept his stupid mouth shut, but if we're already down this road, the details matter.

Goins needs a new lawyer. The punishment does not fit the crime.

The sad part about his behavior is that he now has a jail record. I know the city residence have supported greater police presence since that party festival that got out of hand. It would be preferred if the JMU police could have jurisdiction over the large off campus housing. That puts the administration over these type of activities and would allow for better communication between students and police. It would also allow better security for the housing over summer and winter breaks when break ins are common.

The bottom line, having city police enforcing laws in these large JMU housing areas provides a perfect opportunity for volatility. There is a natural resentment held between the students and the city police.

So goins' attorney appealed today so he is not in jail yet. I say we take some of the goins posters we made over the years and take them down to the court house and cheer on old goins one last time. Who is with me? Man the off season sucks!

listened to the Stoss podcast and still no one has the details. if Goins physically assaulted someone i'd say lock him up - but that's probably not the case. my guess is he was drunk and verbally assaulted an officer. if i'm in the ballpark than jail time is complete joke and he needs to get better representation.

out of curiosity - does anyone know if Rockingham is a jail for profit?

There are no transcripts for misdemeanor trials. And there won't be in circuit either unless his attorney pays for the court reporter.
