3rd UAB team to finish in top Ten.
Very proud of our softball girls. As since we finished in an eight way tie for ninth, I think we should claim it. Heck it as good a claim as some of UATs national championships.

Who are the other teams to finish in the top 10
By that method, it's happened at least 4 other times: Basketball Elite 8 and you would count the two Sweet Sixteens (tied for 9th). Also, the women's basketball team made it to the Sweet Sixteen once (tied for 9th).
If there was a team that actually finished in the top 10 in a poll, I'd have to guess it was synchronized swimming.

In basketball, there are final polls. We have never finished in the top 10 in basketball.
We have only finished the season ranked in basketball twice.
In 1982, when we went to the Elite 8, we might have finished top 10, but there was no post tournament poll, the final poll being at the end of the regular season, and we were ranked #17.
In 2004, after the tournament, we were ranked #23 in the final USA Today/ESPN poll, post tournament, but was unbanked in the AP poll.

Pretty much ranks in the top 2 of all time achievements for the women's team sports.
The WBB team that finished in the elite eight would be the other team.
Men's soccer as well as the MBB team that made it to the elite eight would be the top 2 for the men's team sports.

Upon further review, you are correct.
Had we beaten Rutgers, we would have advanced to the elite 8.
3-17 vs. Oregon (6) W 80-79 (OT)
3-19 vs. Mississippi State (6) W 76-70
3-25 vs. Rutgers (7) L 60-45

Had we beaten Rutgers in the Sweet 16, we had a really good shot to go on to the Final Four. UGA won against North Carolina in their Sweet 16 and UAB had lost to UGA earlier in the season on the Dawgs home court by 2. I was there for all three of those games. Fun times!
