Thoughts about football from a candidate for the presidency of New Mexico State
Someone being considered for the presidency of New Mexico State says he's open to the idea of the Aggies moving from FBS to FCS and would consider dropping football entirely. This article is dated May 9th. I don't know the status of the job search or if this person is still being considered.

The article is by Ben Kercheval of nbcsports.com. The following comment is from Kercheval, not from the presidential candidate, and seems to be relevant in terms of at least some MAC schools:

"it’s an interesting, candid conversation about the feasibility of fielding a FBS football team. In a time when playoff access, television revenue and media rights agreements are large factors in the literal and figurative wealth of a program, there are fewer discussions about the five lower-tier FBS conferences that don’t stand to make a lot of money and their struggles just to keep afloat. And the gap is clearly widening."

Here's the link.

Seems like monopoly/antitrust laws would apply. Rest of Division 1 FBS schools should seek major damages. Certainly not about the ability to beat BCS programs. If anything the non-5 are better models in getting more from less.

There's a saying by some in New Mexico: "If you don't like college football then New Mexico is for you!"

I'll add that basketball, golf , soccer and baseball are entirely different matters.

He mentions the possibility of the lower tier programs breaking away from the NCAA being "far fetched". It would not far fetcehd if they could just band together and come to a common understanding that the NCAA and the "BCS" schools will continue to screw them over. That would be an interesting situation. Why join a union when you get no advantages from membership?

And I think the only reason the bowls are being re-arranged this year is that the P5 want to eliminate any tie-ins with GO5 teams so that there are no bowls between P5 and GO5. It's ridiculous.

Yep. I bet the only ones they will keep will be the ones that are like P5 # 10 vs. Go5 (so, basically, there will be a slim to none chance of the P5 team actually playing the Go5 team).
