Unexpected Compliment To Rice Students
Last evening I was waiting in line to pick up a prescription at our local Walmart. It was going pretty slowly. As I reached the front of the line the two customers ahead of me had some issues with the pharmacists and we were told it would be a few minutes. So this old gieser that was standing on the Dr. Scholl's display compliments me on my choice of New Balance shoes. Then he asks me what I do for a living and I tell him engineer at Lockheed Martin. So he asks me where I received my formal training. I say Rice in Houston. Then he proceeds to tell me and everyone in line behind me that he checked out Rice and they don't let you get in there just because you have a lot of money. If the people in charge there think you have a lot up here (pointing to his head) then they find a way for you to go there. Well I graciously assured him that my parents didn't have a lot of money. The conversation went on a little longer before he made his way off to some other venue, but I thought that was such a cool compliment to receive from a total stranger. (I imagine he might have said something like that to anyone who would talk to him. 'Hard to know. Who knows, it might have been one of those "entertaining angels unaware" moments that we have occasionally.)
