RE: New York, New York!
I'm intrigued by this idea of a rebranding effort and am curious to see how far they go with it. I'm glad I'm not making the decision because I think there are very solid arguments for and against the change.

This is similar to there not being a University of Louisiana established and the challenges schools like UL LA have had in making that claim.

good luck.

NEW YORK!

I like it.

In my opinion, UB's "New York" branding is nothing like UL-Lafayette's attempt. While New York state doesn't have an "official" Flagship, UB is the closest to one and could reasonably be considered the de facto Flagship University for the State of New York. The State of Louisiana has a Flagship and that's LSU. In addition, the University of Louisiana system doesn't have a flagship either but if it did, the Lafayette campus doesn't have any compelling argument to claim to be it.

Maybe if it was a state school.

That's what Syracuse would like you to believe, but they are not part of SUNY. They declined the opportunity to join and chose to remain a private institution.

I don't have any hard numbers, but Syracuse is academically well regarded, especially among those who might look down upon public schools. Syracuse has notable journalism and broadcast journalism programs.

I believe the guy that BSU hired to replace Morrie Mannies is from Syracuse.

Thought 'Cuse recently lost their AAU status where UB is AAU.
Like the rebranding and ownership as the leading state university.

I wish they would change the name of the entire university to New York. UB could be a Big Ten-quality university if SUNY and the little brothers would get out of the way.

Very well done. I've heard that Syracuse is making an effort to brand themselves as a New York University so it's a good thing that Buffalo is taking the Bull by the horns and staking their claim to being the Public U in New York State.

That's SU's 'New York's College Team' campaign. It's a drive to engage their NYC base since the Johnnies and Rutgers can claim the same based on certain data. Only 50% of SU's students are NY'ers and most are down-staters. The logo has the slogan with the Manhattan skyline in the background, complete with ads on some NYC taxis and a few home football games moved to MetLife Stadium.

Guess this is the answer:

One is flagship academically and the other flagship athletically.

As this is a MAC sports board, I don't need to remind the reader of which is which...

"Thought 'Cuse recently lost their AAU status where UB is AAU.

RE: New York, New York!
I think it is appropriate now (FINALLY!) to make (again) my suggestion to add Stony Brook to the MAC for FB (and all sports with UMass).

They are obviously a New York university (on Long Island).

They are an AAU member, which would give the MAC two, Buffalo and Stony Brook.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association...iversities

And they are trying really hard to grow their athletic programs with some success. Last year (2012) they beat Army badly in football, gave Syracuse a very tough game, made the Collegiate World Series in Omaha, etc.

They could become rivals for both Buffalo and UMass.

They fit today in terms of academics (obviously!!!) and athletically. This isn't like Elon University joining the CAA. Stony Brook is not a reach.

Stony Brook is a high ceiling FCS school with excellent academics, excellent location and strong desire to grow.

Is Stony Brook potentially a small-sized Rutgers????
