RE: Owls in the Summer Leagues
No all-star break for those playing in the Cape, as teams played a full slate on both Friday night and again this afternoon (with the all-star festivities yesterday). In fact, several teams play doubleheaders today. Leon Byrd (.279) was 1-4, but with his first HR of the Summer, in Falmouth 3-1 win in Game 1 earlier this afternoon.

RE: Owls in the Summer Leagues
In the Cape tonight, Byrd (.259) continues to slump with another 0-fer (his average falling from a high of .312 just a couple weeks ago)...Evan Rutter got his first start of the Summer and pitched solidly, but did not factor in the decision (2.04 ERA. 5.0 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 0 BBs, 4 Ks)...Stainback went 0-1 and Ewing had the day off. McCanna was supposed to start tonight, but didn't see action.

RE: Owls in the Summer Leagues
In the Cape last night, Skyler Ewing (.319) went 0-1 with a walk and run scored as a pinch hitter in the DH slot...Leon Byrd (.269) went 1-3 and 1-2 with 2 BBs and a run scored in a doubleheader... Kevin McCanna got the start and pitched 5 solid, but not great innings (5.0 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 BB, 1 K)-- my continuing concern with Kevin is his continued lack of strikeouts and missing bats....Ford Stainback (.205) was 1-4, with a double and run scored. Finally, Zech Lemond returned to Houston to enjoy his final 3 weeks before returning to school.

In the Northwoods League, Ryan McCarthy got another start and was again hit hard (6.52 ERA, 6.2 IP, 9 hits, 8 runs, 3 BBs, 7 Ks)...Kirby Taylor (.167) went 1-4.

Strikeouts are definitely down for Kevin. Opponents only hitting .250 against him though, so not too bad there.

That wasn't Kirby Taylor in the Northwoods League. Different Taylor playing for Wisconsin last night.

RE: Owls in the Summer Leagues
Matt Ditman was the star of the night, bouncing back strongly from his poor last outing with a very strong start tonight (6.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, 7 Ks). Personally, I think we need Matt to help anchor the bullpen along with Rutter and Fox in 2014 (assuming Lemond moves into the weekend starter role as The OG has indicated), but will be interesting to see if either Ditman or Fox get a shot at one of the mid-week starter spots. Matt's stats so far this Summer reads as follows:

8 starts, 2-2 (1 complete game), 44.0 IP, 3.47 ERA, 56 hits, 6 BBs, 43 Ks

...and that includes one start in which he was shelled, giving up 14 hits and 8 runs. Most impressive stat of all is only 6 BBs (vs. 43 Ks) in 44 innings pitched. I'm sure the coaching staff will be working with him this Fall to add a change up to his quality fastball - hammer curve combo.

Out on the Cape, the Byrdman (.260) went 1-6 with a run scored in Falmouth's win, while Skyler Ewing (.295) was 1-2, with a double (8), 3 BBs and an RBI (20) to help Hyannis to victory.

RE: Owls in the Summer Leagues
Nice shoutout to Zech Lemond (who left the Cape last week) by Perfect Game scouts covering the CCBL all-star game last Saturday. In the article, they bemoan the reality that many of the most highly regarded pitching prospects in the Cape this Summer were not selected to participate in the all-star game...and they have clips of guys who would have been selected if this was to be a showcase for the scouting community. Both ECU's Jeff Hoffman and Zech were included in the "if this were a showcase" writeups. Note, premium (subscriber) content only...

http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View...ticle=8860

Quote:If it was a showcase:
Jeff Hoffman would have without a doubt taken the ball for the West squad, getting the nod after back-to-back electric starting performances against Orleans and Chatham in the previous two weeks. The league’s top prospect wouldn’t fail to light up the radar guns from the large contingent of scouts behind home plate, as he’d likely top 98 mph with his fastball and work consistently at 94-97 with exploding life through the zone. The hitters that did manage to square up his fastball would likely pound the ball into the dirt in front of home plate. His curveball would be his put away pitch of choice at 80-82 mph, and there’s a good chance we would have seen some jelly legged hitters going down looking. Needless to say it would have been an exciting and worthy start to the 2013 Cape League All-Star game.

Quote:Bottom of the 9th

If it was a showcase:
Zech Lemond would have been a very logical choice to close this game out for the West squad. He’d pitch at 92-94 mph with his fastball as he’s done most of the summer, and would have likely shown some 95s in there as well. His breaking ball would show late action, and scouts would likely come away impressed with his solid feel and command for these two above average offerings.

This is the lineup of pitching I would have liked to have seen if I was asked to put together a “Cape Showcase” of sorts.

RE: Owls in the Summer Leagues
In the Cape, excellent night for Ford Stainback (.238), who went 2-3, with 2BBs and 2 runs scored; not so much for Evan Rutter (2.33 ERA, 1.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 1 K) as Brewster lost 6-4. Ewing was 0-3 with 2 Ks in Hyannis' win...and Byrd was 1-5 with 2 runs scored in Falmouth's win.

Note-- Skyler was removed from the game in the top of the 9th inning, when a bunt attempt glanced off his bat and hit him just below the eye. Hopefully, he'll just have a bad shiner for a couple days. Given he is arguably our best bunter-- and one of our only guys who actually squares around properly to lay down a sac bunt, I hope this doesn't present a fear factor for him going forward.

As someone who has been hit in the face with a pitched ball (looking at you Jayme Sperring!), get well soon and I hope it was a glancing blow!

Bad days for Byrd (.252, 0-3, BB, RBI) and McCanna (6.59 ERA, L, 2-2, 3.0 IP, 9 hits, 7 runs, 2 BBs, 2 Ks) in the Cape and Orewiler (W, 6.47 ERA, 3 hits, 2 runs, 3 BBs, 3 Ks) in the Northlands League, who got the win nevertheless. Austin has struggled with his control all Summer.

Hoelscher had a big day as Santa Barbara remained in the winners bracket in the NBC World Series. Shane collected to hits and made a great defensive play at 3B...

Quote:A seventh hit was robbed by Hoelscher, who dove toward the line to come up with a hard liner that he then gunned over to first to finish off the web gem.

According to a tweet from Kendall, the cut required stitches.

Area code games start today and are on ESPN3. Rice commits Stone Garrett and Tristan Gray are on the Rangers team who play today at 4:30pm CDT.

RE: Owls in the Summer Leagues
With Falmouth, Hyannis and Santa Barbara all now eliminated from the post-season, Summer League baseball is over for most of our Owls. (I believe both the Northlands League and TCL are still going.) Given classes start in just over 2 weeks, this is probably a good thing. Solid Summers for Ditman, Fox, Lemond, Hoelscher, Brian Smith and Byrd...outstanding Summers for Ewing, Reeves and Cook.

IMO, the one area Leon Byrd needs to work is stolen base efficiency; meaning getting better reads on pitchers and better breaks off 1B. Again this Summer at the Cape, he got caught stealing over 33% of the time, which is far too frequently for someone with his speed. The problem is I'm not sure we have anyone on the coaching who can help him in this development need (unless Lance does finally retire).

Here is an article about Rice recruit Tristan Gray at the Area Code Games. It mentions how his dad and former Rice player, Jason, was drafted by the Rangers in 2000.

edit to correct where Jason played in 2000

I still think Jason is the top defensive CF'er in Rice history.

Not to be nitpicking, but the article says that Jason was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2000, not that he played on the Rangers' team in the Area Code Games in 2000. After all, that would make him either a VERY young father (13 y.o.?) or the OLDEST (DOB = 7/7/1977) Area Code Games player in history, wouldn't it?

If I recall correctly, he played the final year of the old field (pre-Reckling), which seems like it was a double-header vs TCU (again, my memory is hazy), and I recall him making yet another ridiculous catch, laying out full speed to snag a sinking liner.

Well Jason was a young father but not quite that young. I missed the "drafted by" in the article and was thinking AC games for both. I corrected the original post.

Nice summary of how Rice players performed this Summer...

http://www.examiner.com/article/how-rice...er-leagues

...the only thing he missed was that JC Reeves split his Summer between the Texas League (which was mentioned) and the more prestigous Northwoods League (where he hit .333).
