Penn State reached out to the BE, but was not let in due to its poor basketball. I don't know why the ACC didn't let them in though. Location maybe? IDK.

You are wrong here. When Bryce Jordan became President of Penn State, he decided his legacy would be to move Penn State into the Big 10. It wouldn't have mattered what league they were in, they were leaving as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

It's all ancient history. So what does it matter now?

It may be history but "sometimes" history repeats itself...I find it interesting in this current day within a 25 Year period 2 BCS/CFP Leagues pretty much died....the "Original BIG EAST & the SWC"...The Original BIG EAST was in the end gave the ACC the idea to go ahead and try to capture the entire East Coast and even reach into the Midwest....the SWC for being way too "TexasCentric" in geography...

The concept of the 16 team super-conference with two divisions of 8 or 4 divisions of 4 goes back to 1990. It was proposed by Raycom Sports.

Not sure why West Virginia was left out entirely in this article above and VT only mentioned at the end. They were definitely suppose to be part of the 16-team league.

Here the Sports Business article that shows the breakdown of the schools knowing PSU wasn't available.

History just wasn't on the Big East's side.

If things had gone a little different, we might be talking about this power conference:

Uconn
Syracuse
Rutgers
Penn State
Pitt
Boston College

West Virginia
Maryland
Virginia Tech
Louisville
Miami
Florida State

So, um ... I'm very interested in reading RedMan's view of history..

The Big East approached the ACC in a collegiate manner about a merger and the ACC reacted in a very capitalistic way because it's owners at ESPN told them to.

Thats what happened. The ACC themselves said all they wanted to do was MAYBE extend to 10 with Miami, not 12 then 14.

The root of ACC expansion falls on ESPN's greed.

Well, that's an interesting take on history, but really doesn't explain the 1998 meeting being referenced in the two articles posted in this thread or why Tranghese came with the proposal to merge the two leagues for football only but keep all other sports separate.

Cheers,
Neil
