Losing ECU sucked. No doubt about it. It's always nice to have at least one conference opponent close. Sadly, (unless you count Charlotte) this will not be the case for us. Indeed, we are the fringe of CUSA but that's a price that has to be payed.

Everything is going to get better: Better stadium. Better recruits. Better publicity. Better funding. Better academics. Better competition. A better conference.

Go Monarchs!!!! 04-rock

Hopefully better publicity. I think the CAA was better academically. WM > Rice and the rest are a little better than their CUSA counter part. For example, Drexel, NE, UD, JMU is probably a better academic package than La T, So Miss, UNCC, UAB. I agree with the stadium and competition. I hope the fans enjoy us playing better teams rather than familiar names and rivalries with co workers. time will tell.

Great comment, Monarx. Was very easy to get up for a VCU BB game or JMU football game with the number of my my customers that have rooting interests in the Virginia programs. No a huge fan of Tom Yeager (particularly with the inability to rotate the CAA BB tourney out of VCU's back yard), but he cobbled together a pretty unique and special affiliation of driveable schools in Virginia that held solid rivalries that could translate into fan support in multiple sports.

It will be more difficult to have a similar experience with many of the CUSA schools, although I have been more observant of CUSA school logos in the places I frequent. Marshall, in particular, has a wide presence in the Richmond area (there is a restaurant in West Point that I frequent that has Herd flags flying), so I hope to generate some rivalry blood with them, UNCC, and potentially WKU and MTSU. Hopefully the upgrade in competition can bridge the familiarity gap until some "bad blood " is developed.

Very valid points. I'll miss not having any VA schools in the conference but if ODU is going to be a national university then we need to have a national conference, which is what CUSA is. No denying about the academics though. I think people will understand the change but it will be tough initially. Hopefully we can still play Virginia schools in OCS games. The entire culture of ODU sports will have to change as we move to a new conference.

Here's a pretty in-depth story of how ODU ended up leaving the CAA.

I am 100% positive that guy that made the comment at the bottom is not a JMU fan.

The fact that he met with JMU and Delaware is cowardly. Who does he think he is? No loyalty or respect to the CAA. Where would ODU be without the support of the CAA? Then to secretly recruit teams out of the league because he wants out. Total scumbag in my opinion. Payback is coming for him. It is the way fate works.

Also what happens to FBS football when the big 5 conferences pull out of the NCAA? Probably merge non big 5 teams (ODU included) and top FCS teams.

lol, sounds like a jealous little bitchy fan of W&M.

Very well written, informative article. The decision to move up to Conference USA was a no brainer, in football parlance. Yet Broderick, in his own words kept going back and forth unable to make a decision.does this show a lack of vision? Broderick is one of the few college leaders lacking a Doctorate or previous experience leading a University. It shows.

It looks like Broderick consulted everyone's opinion except Miley Cyrus before committing ODU to Conference USA. If only Broderick had been this worried about paying Sen. Phil Hamilton for his no show job, ODU could have avoided that stain on its reputation.

Both comments fall into the category of "Bitter __________ (insert school not named Old Dominion) fan".

I expect nothing less than a bunch of sour grapes from those whose schools lacked the criteria, the foresight, or the initiative to attempt what our leadership accomplished. I'm quite enjoying seeing them do a slow burn.

Welp, what began over a year ago has now come to fruition. ODU is officially part of Conference USA. I can't wait for the first game.
