RE: Top Ten GOF Schools in Football
What is the purpose of this thread other than a d#ck measuring contest? From this point those records mean zilch. I more interested in seeing some smack talk about this season's scheduled teams.

The original post did say "on the field performance" so this is a bit of variation from that.

Why is a 20 years the cut off for relevance? It's arbitrary.
Well, it doesn't make any difference for my local Group of Five school, since 5, 10 or 20 years would all give the same answer ~ "pretty weak until last year".
But cutoff's are normally either arbitrary or cherry picked to put some school in a flattering light. I'd prefer arbitrary for a question like this. Of the "ten to twenty years" in the OP, I'd rather ten, since I wasn't paying much attention to college football for the decade I was living in Australia, and the six years before then I was living in Knoxville any broader view of college sports had to squint through a decidedly orange glare.
Quote: Why not compare since 2005? That's arbitrary too, but at least that's when the last round of realignment started.
I don't much care whether its 20yrs, 10yrs or 5yrs, but "since 2005" sounds suspiciously non-arbitrary to me.
Quote: Or 1965? Again arbitrary, but at least that's generally considered the start of the modern era in college football (i.e. integration).
Yeah, but I'm not sure how long before the formalization of the FBS Majors and the FBS Mid-Majors in the BCS system in 1998 that the Mid-Majors was a clear and distinct group. That's another advantage of 10yrs over 20yrs, since 10yrs fits inside of the BCS era, starting in 1998.

Well not exactly. The Late 90s-early 2000s were also good overall. In addition the 70s were a good time (cmon Tangerine Bowls and even Kent State getting ranked in the regular season) and I think the MAC was doing well in the 60s. For the most part the dark times were the 80-mid 90s and there was also a noticeable overall slump in the mid 2000s.

I prefer 10 years because NIU had a few atrocious years in the 90s. But we'll just ignore those....

I give kudos to BYU, Boise, maybe ECU and USM. Most of the other schools on the list had the advantage of the AQ status. TCU and Utah should get into this list for the fact they helped themselves up when they did not belong in the AQ's.

1. Boise State
2. B.Y.U.
3. Cincinnati
4. Southern Miss
5. U.C.F.
6. Tulsa
7. East Carolina
8. Houston
9. Marshall
10.U.S.F.
Sigh... just like the introduction of the "mid-major" term in general and the "mid-major" basketball Top 25, lets not do this in football too.... All this does is formally acknowledge their is a top and "mid" division. A kind of subliminal waving of the white flag.
That list looks eerily like a FCS 2.0 Top 25 poll. I'm sure Slive and Delaney love this list as they try to separate from the rest of us.
Maybe we should name this "The non-full-cost-of-attendance-$3,000-division" Top 25 !!

There's the decade I was overseas and watching rugby league and soccer on the TV and reading soccer boards. Great game, rugby league, but for some reason living in Ohio again I haven't been following the Newcastle Knights seasons very closely.

Which goes beyond the frame of discussion ... if someone posts "who was the top ten Go5 over the past ten-twenty years", and some MAC or Houston fan wants to talk about records all-time or the past fifty years, they really could just post a competing topic, "who was the top ten Go5 over the past 50 years?"
Though obviously complaining about the frame of the question is not as silly as posting a comment to ask what is the point of this kind of question, from someone who if they took a brief look around could realize that they are on a sports discussion forum and the point of the post is to have a discussion on the topic.
