Damn, you are batting 1.000!!! And sadly, these clowns fit the profile of the power structure that exists in this state on many levels. Since you mentioned "bought and sold", what did you think of the situation with those county workers selling prime spots in line for car tags? I actually heard some of my coworkers state that they would pay $40 extra or so to get to jump to the front of one of those primitive car tag lines. I'll be damned if I pay extortion money for some **** like that... It is so pitiful that this region has resorted to this backwards method of doing business with its' residents, and I didn't know that you had to buy your car tag in the county in which you reside in this state. I'm betting the Flintstones didn't have to contend with this suckage!

I have lived in four different states. Everyone of them had the requirement that you have to buy your tag in the county where you live. I don't think that rule qualifies as backwardness. It's like being required to pay income taxes in the country that you live in.

You can, however, renew your personal driver's license at any county courthouse regardless of your county of residence, and many people confuse "license" and "car tag."

In fact, when I lived in Tennessee, specifically, Rutherford County, car tags were used to bust people who were cheating the system from neighboring counties to enroll their children in Rutherford County Schools, which were significantly better than those in surrounding counties. People would lie about where they lived by giving fake addresses at enrollment, but then drop off their kids with their out-of-county tags. When that happened, the school would investigate. When they cracked down at the start of a particular school year, about 250 kids were kicked out of Rutherford County Schools and their parents fined thousands of dollars by the county for out-of-district tuition for the years their kids had cheated the system.

It caused quite a stir. I thought it was fair. My higher taxes shouldn't subsidize some other kid's education because the parent is too cheap to live in a county with higher taxes, or pay the out-of-district fee to enroll them in the school.

True. I grew up in Franklin County, Alabama. If you renewed your license in Franklin County, you had to pay a fee that went to Russellville City Schools (courthouse is in Russellville). Something about that seems to be unethical, so my dad renews his license in neighboring Lawrence County.

& you can even renew your car tag online in Jefferson County & don't have to wait in line for hours or have to step over old people who have passed out.

That's exactly what I once paid a Hungarian border guard to accept my visa. Within a year, the regime had crumbled.

In a land where a racist gambling magnate can be put in charge of the country's most profitable athletic program, where bankster criminals steal billions and walk free yet Curtis Wilkerson is in the 18th year of a life sentence for nabbing a $2.49 pair of tube socks, none of this is surprising.

We live in a Third World Hell of our own making.

Well said. You really had to cough up some money to some damn border patrol toadstool to get him to honor a legal document? People wonder why I hate toll roads so much, different method, same principle applies in my eyes. Mind if I ask you about your Hungarian adventure, IOW, what were you over there for? 03-lmfao I have/had pen pals-friends in Romania and they'd invited me over for visits, they were fellow jazz enthusiasts, but I wasn't able to accommodate.

Okay. So, what are the disadvantages of being able to purchase/renew your car tag in a similar manner to your drivers license? And the "backwardness" I was referring to was the time frame in which everyone pretty much had to get their tag renewed at the same time instead of having the dates of expiration spread out in months as they do now (took them damn long enough to come up with that one), example, my renewal month is July, I forget the criteria involved that has me set for that month as the required date of my tag renewal. Even though many get a "taste of yesteryear" anyway with drivers waiting until the last week or days to renew their tag, & having to stand in some long, pain-in-the *** lines, they're nothing compared to the lines I had to face in the 70's and 80's in early years of driving. Longest I ever stood in a car tag line for one day: 10 and a half hours. Sure seems primitive to me.

No big winner. I did play Keno and won $52 plus another $7 for having three numbers and no power ball. If I would have at least got the power ball it would have been 100. At least it paid for my tickets and dinner at Subway!

Tags are issued by the county. Licenses are issued by the state. It makes sense then that you pay for tags where you reside and can get a license anywhere in the state.

Or you can pay the extra $2, do it on line, and have them mail you your tag renewal.

The only time you actually HAVE to get in the tag line is when you're registering a car you just bought for the first time.

Not quite. By the time taxes take over he or she will take home maybe 40% of the listed jackpot. And statistically speaking he or she will be close to bankrupt in the next few years.

Uncle Sam's a greedy, inglorious bastage, I grant you that. I thought Florida didn't tax income (maybe I got my states mixed up), isn't this considered income? And if you were in this person's shoes, how would you go about not becoming a "statistic?" I have seen some lottery horror stories, one of them I know of, his good fortune cost him his life. But I have also seen triumphant lottery stories too, where the winners ride off into the sunset enjoying their winnings and still haven't gone back to the poor house. Tell you what, even after the ******* IRS guts your earnings like a trout, this kind of jackpot even after taxes, most of us wouldn't mind having that kind of "problem".

I just want to experience the feeling firsthand, and go from there. Who was it that said, better to have had and lost, than to have never had at all?!!!

Florida doesn't tax income, but it's still high enough they won't come home with anywhere near what they think they'll get.

The best thing for the person to do in my opinion is absolutely nothing for the next year or two. Find a good investment adviser and park the money while you learn how to be rich. That's the problem with rags to riches stories such as lottery winners and athletes. They don't know how to save and invest.

That our plan, with one difference: I will go out and buy a high end sports car. Once I scratch that itch, it'll be easier to take a deep breath and map out a plan. 03-lol

RE: The lottery
Florida, Tenn. and Texas are nearby states that don't have a state income tax. Just wondering, if your numbers came up "big winner", how long would it take to become a legal citizen of one of those states? You can't do anything about the federal (IRS) tax cut, but can you avoid the state income tax cut?

Since those states don't collect state income taxes, how do they organize their tax structure to make up for the "lost" revenue? Alabama has a relatively low (5%) state income tax flat rate and a low (4%) state sales tax rate. Alabama covers for that by providing only the lowest levels of state services to its citizens, but how do those other states do it?

RE: The lottery
Don't know about other states, but Florida makes up for it with relatively high property taxes. Since the winnings are a one time thing, why would I become a citizen of another state? I'm already paying the state income tax the one time. I would essentially pay more tax by buying property in another state and paying the tax on the property.
