The Effects of an ACC Network
What do you think will be the effects of an ACC Network on the ACC and college sports in general?

The tv coverage given to ACC basketball in the early years is one of the big reasons that sport became as popular as it did in North Carolina and other places in the South.

I'm very interested to see if the exposure that ACC baseball, lacrosse and soccer helps any of those sports cross the threshold of being revenue sports. I think it's most likely to happen with baseball. ACC baseball is a fantastic product in search of an audience. TV coverage will help the ACC build up its fanbase for that sport. Maybe eventually the number of scholarships each school can offer will be increased that will help concentrate the talent in leagues that get massive tv exposure.

The network will help introduce the sport of lacrosse to general audiences in large segments of our footprint. One of things that will hold it back is so few of the ACC teams field the sport.

The ACC is a great soccer league, but I don't think this sport can be made into a revenue sport anytime in the foreseeable future.

RE: The Effects of an ACC Network
Does anyone have a list of the major sports that ended up on ESPN3 only the past couple of years? It'd be interesting to see what kinds of games we are missing out on now.

ESPN3 only? Not much. A handful of Barclays Premier League games. Some Aussie Rules Football. I think some of the NHRA & SCCA/Trans Am racing series events are shown live on ESPN3 then packaged into tape-delayed airings.

There have been some collegiate sports that were ESPN3 exclusive. Some football, a handful of men's basketball, plus stuff that WakeForestRanger mentioned.

I meant major ACC sports...the basketball and football games that didn't get televised anywhere.

Here's the football since the 1st "new" rights agreement was signed in 2010 for the 2011 season.

I'll try to get a list of ACC basketball on ESPN3, but I'm fairly confident that they were all non-conference games. All conference games were covered by CBS, ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, ACC Network and ACC RSNs.

RE: The Effects of an ACC Network
ACC coverage in the Raleigh area is pathetic. Sports coverage in general is pathetic. TV news is limited to ~5 minutes. Less if it rains. There are 2 full time sports radio stations but they are pathetic. The local news paper coverage is pathetic. Consistency is good though.

The bar is pretty low. Anything the ACC network does would be an improvement.

I hope a network doesn't do away with the games that Raycom distributes. I like being able to watch games on CBS.

No, the "ACC Network" ones come on the local CBS here. It's pretty convenient.

I think any acc network will take those games on to the network

Well that would be a shame to take things from network television and put them on the cable sports package. That isn't an upgrade.

That's one of the reasons the ACC was slow to go ahead on this new ACC cable channel.

I think that's the point though. Take those games from ACC Net over the air package, the RSN package plus ESPN3 exclusives and content being shown only on ACCDN and package it together for a network that can have consistent delivery method. RSNs can be hit and miss due to pro sports & depending on the market, the over-the-air package could be on a digital subchannel not carried on a cable/satellite operator. Some affiliates of the ACC Network basketball package either dump their weeknight games to a lesser viewed channel, or pick and choose the ones they'll carry (ie. Tampa). That what the other conference networks have done. The point is to monetize that content, make money off ad sales, get the content more widely distributed.

If its just the ESPN3 exclusives and ACCDN content, its not really worth it.

Does it mean more money for FSU? Sounds like an upgrade for me.

I understand you derive happiness from how much money FSU makes. I don't really care how much VT makes. I care about being able to watch the games I want to see.

That is the point of a conference network though. There has to be a draw back to making more money, and that is it. It forces you to have cable. Just like ABC moving prime events to ESPN does.
