FSU 2013 Commit asking for release from scholarship

It will be interesting to see what they do with this. They would be crazy to grant him his request in my opinion because it would set a precedent. As of now the craziness ends on signing day but if this kind of thing were allowed it would never end.

Asking to be released to he can play in 2013 at another school or in 2014?

IMO the kid has to sit a year if he wants out just like everyone else.

It wouldn't set anything, they will grant him his release. Ftball is no different than any other sport. Why would you want a guy that doesn't want to be there. There would be many many more transfers in ftball, if they didn't redshirt most freshman.

It would tell players everywhere that it's OK to change your mind after signing day and go play someplace else before you've even set foot on campus. It would also open backdoor recruiting for said players. Not good.

+1

If the guy doesn't want to be at FSU, he shouldn't have signed the LOI. The excuse that his mother pressured him is really lame.

I agree, he should be treated like any other player who wishes to transfer.

Players already know they can change their mind. The kid doesn't want to be at your school, let him go and find someone that does. He will be treated just like any other kid that wants out of his NLI.

Yep. This is a transfer. No hardship situation here.

Let this kid out of his LOI and the floodgates will open.

RE: FSU 2013 Commit asking for release from scholarship
There are a lot of things in motion right now with Matthew Thomas. The ESPN article doesn't nearly tell the entire story.

FSU Coaches are not letting him out of his LOI. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't end up enrolling at FSU. Some of the information getting out is premature. In fact, his mom has been out of the country and just returned.

While he might be a good talent, FSU can release him as they have talented people on the roster that want to be at FSU. In the end, these are 18yo kids and we all know how much we changed our minds at that age.

RE: FSU 2013 Commit asking for release from scholarship
No one from FSU is going to release Matthew Thomas. The only question is whether he is going to practice and play this year.

I think he still ends up at FSU, that is also the feeling of most within the program.

While you can't blame any 18 year old for making bad or wrong decisions, they still have to be held accountable for their actions. I do not want a player that doesn't want to play for the Seminoles and FSU can use that scholarship on someone who does, but that is not what is in play right now. The issue is about LOI responsibility.

Yep. And really, if there was a lot of coaching turnover, I think it would be fair to give him a release, since coaches leave all the time, why should the player be stuck when the coach can leave any time he wants on short notice.
