Is the outside wall of the stadium a memorial?

The new stadium sits on the location of Huntington's former Veteran's Memorial Fieldhouse. Over the decades that the building served as a war memorial it hosted countless sporting and entertainment events, including the glory days of Marshall basketball.

In order to satisfy the protests of a local historical preservation group, Marshall agreed to include Veteran's Memorial in the name of the stadium and to incorporate sections of the old VMFH facade into the new design. That facade being installed is what you see in the pics.

The piece in the center of the 2nd pic is what was removed before demolition of the fieldhouse and is being re-installed on the soccer stadium facade.

Marshall any good at soccer?

I'm looking forward to CUSA soccer. Should be one of the best conferences in the country.

Charlotte
UAB
New Mexico
Kentucky
ODU
South Carolina
Florida Schools

That's not a bad core to build an incredible soccer conference around. Should have several ranked teams each year.

Its iffy we were 11-5-1 last year and 11-5-2 the year before. With the new stadium we should be able to recruit better than where we were with Sam Hood Field. I always felt Sam Hood field like the 1st Dot Hicks field (softball) was just thrown up to have a home and wasn't thought through.

Besides the soccer complex there will be a park incorporated in to the stadium, dedicated to the veteran's.

Quite honestly, I think the redesign to incorporate some features from the VMF was the best outcome. The original design with a giant M and a giant Soccer ball was rather tacky.

Agreed.

Here is a video of the update that the Big Green released today.

I've always read that artificial turf on soccer fields is very frowned upon. Having never played soccer I don't really know what difference it makes, so I just take other people's word for it.

RE: Soccer Stadium construction update
It is.

Field turf does funky stuff to ball movements. Its also is harsher on players as the slide and dive, and it makes it more difficult to properly tackle.

However, maintaining a proper pitch to FIFA standards is rather expensive, so a lot of places cop out and install turf that's been begrudgingly approved by FIFA.

I like it. Keep some history without taking away the ability to move forward.

New Pics up. The complex will be ready before this soccer season in Aug.

Marshall Soccer Complex 6-21-13

The turf being installed is a grade 2 for FIFA. Which is the highest grade FIFA gives.

For the elite 8 in the high school playoffs, we had to play on an astro turf field, I really don't feel sympathy for people complaining about field turf.

Checking out the video cam for the IPF. I didn't even realize they had started moving earth at the site already.

Played in my first soccer game since I outgrew post-game orange slices last night.

It was on turf and I loved it. I could just blame the turf when I misplayed a ball.

(my teammates don't have to know)
