Great article! Shows that Coach Cullop is recruiting overseas so that she can get the best possible players for UT, not because UT can't recruit in the US.

Thanks Ryan for presenting a rather complete and compelling case for international recruiting as well as supported kudos for Coach Cullop's efforts and results.

Good thing is that when the big boys DO start recruiting overseas seriously UT will have a serious foot in the door already. We are obviously on the radar of European coaches.

Great article.

It also indicates just how important Coach Vickie Hall is to the program with all of her European connections, knowledge and language skills. I hope Coach Cullop gets her a raise. Pick up another international player or two and my outlook for the coming season is going to be revised upward a few notches.

I could imagine an import having a little more maturity in some ways and a more favorable attitude than some domestic kids.

I think that the Blade article made a very important point that foreigners in general are not programmed their whole lives with the strong US cultural bias favoring the Major conference teams over their "poor relatives", the Mid-major conference teams. So whereas the MAJOR get their pick of the litter of the top domestic talent (and the mid-majors fight over whats left) the international players are not so aware of the "have" and "have not" distinctions that are so clear to us natives. Besides as long as there is enough top talent to satisfy the Majors, they don't need the hassle of dealing with international recruits.

I used to think that the international players that UT got were just more experienced than most of the domestics, but I am beginning to see that that in many cases they may also be more talented to begin with.
