So I guess the state can stop subsidizing UAT & AU since they bring in so much more money so as to save just under $10mil or spend that elsewhere where it's needed more

Where does the subsidy money come from? I know part comes from fees charged to the students, but where does the rest come from?

There's actually an important story buried under Solomon's axe-grinding, but he apparently lacks the ability to see it or to execute it if he did (we are talking about an Advance Media employee here, the walk-ons of sports journalism. No, that's too generous. The towel boys of sports journalism.).

So bammer made $12 million on sports and Auburn made $9 million.

Where did it go?

So they are talking about medians here and not averages, which means the skew is relatively accounted for.

The average net deficit for Division I schools that lost money was $14.6 million in 2012, up from $12.1 million in 2011. UAB and South Alabama each exceeded the average.

At UAB the money came from interest income and indirect cost subsidies from federal grants. The same money has provided a lot of funding for buildings at UAB

UAT gives about a million to the University per paper, you can carry over to next year but UAT has been building facilities for sports and paying cash. Went to UAB/UAT soccer game and they have built a tennis facility, a newer soccer stadium with a BIG sceen and a new weight facility, etc
Further their athletic debt has been decreasing faster than required.
Remuors are clearing the books for ether a new basketball or baseball facility

They are paying 3x the going rate for commercial buildings. Somebody is getting paid.

Their construction numbers simply don't add up. I wish the Feds would start snooping around again. The last time they did Bear Jr had to sell his interests in the concrete company that was supplying most of the concrete to projects.

I know you would have to search long and hard to get a Bammer to admit it, but with UAT winning 15 national championships...How many were won with their budgets being subsidized by the state and school? My guess is 13. Back in the 50's, 60's,70's and 80's both UAT and AU were the only truly state schools with FB programs. You cannot tell me that they have never been subsidized. The BOT and the media are creating a "Double Standard" that make very it hard for UAB to be successful and profitable. Winning games is the only way we can change this. This is what it will take to get butts in the seats and money rolling in.

Come fall, I hope we are 2-0 or at least 1-1 by 9/21 (first home game). If we are prepared, the only two games we will struggle with are LSU and possibly Vandy. We should definately finish with a winning record and be bowl bound. Should finish 10-2 and be bowl bound! Go Blazers!

Could anyone imagine the scheduling problems those 23 would have if not for the other "goldbrickers" who have to suffer the "buy game routine" just to survive? They surely didn't get to be in that "Select 23" by playing 7 or 8 "away" games every year. That is why they oppose playing more conference games because they can't play them "at home" every year. With the bigger conferences, are we headed toward a 14 or 15 game regular season in the future?

The SEC median school spends over $163,900 per athlete per year (2010 figure) and I would be surprised (even shocked) if either of our two BCS schools are below the SEC median. BTW, The SEC median for 2010 was OVER $30,000 per athlete per year more than the #2 conference - the Big 12.

From the article, UAB is JUST below the average, which means that nearly half of DI schools in the country subsidize more than UAB does.

I'm sure the UAT's and Floridas have been strategizing for a while on how to force the Vanderbilts and Mississippi States to play conference games 2-for-1.
