This assumes you don't pay a talent fee to the interviewer and that you have access to pro-quality edit/production software. This figure also assumes Rice U let's us use a broadcast tv quality on campus studio facility rent-free. It also assumes whoever lays out the story board and scripts (ie, sketches) the interviews does so for zip nada, but I basically did that on the fly this morning and I'll finish it for zip nada. And future scotch considerations. This figure may or may not be in line with your estimate, but I guessing this would take a half day on location (campus) and a half day in the rent-free broadcast quality studio.

I'd say much, much cheaper than $8k. Especially if you're excluding all those line items (equipment, prep, talent, etc). It could easily be done in LA for $1k or $2k, so Houston can't be 4x as much. Rice should own a high-end package by now (I have no clue if they do or don't); at least a cam body and a multi-use lens, if not a set of primes. It's no longer expensive. Canons for under $2k. To *own*. Even a good Red can be had for under $8k. To *own*. Great portable, batt-powered lights are cheap now, too (Kino's, etc). A high-end FCP set-up, etc. But all this is beside the point (mine, at least). I'm not talking about production. I'm talking about good old-fashioned PR, pub, spin, etc. That costs virtually nothing. Just effort. I chuckle when people mock or bemoan the media; the media is just us. It's our tool. Rice should exploit it more.

All tech costs you mention are accurate. Please note I specified pro-quality crew talent. At the min we are talking $4K -- at the minimum. Now, we may disagree on what constitutes pro-quality talent. I mean, with a hip moniker like Smackdaddy, for all I know you hang tight with big time Hollycool/New Jerk folks little ole me will never ever know much less friend on Facebook. And heck, 'cause you're tight with these global opinion leaders they'll likely deign to do the Tight End Show for far less than my narrow, regionally informed estimate. So go get'em, bro. Why, the result of their deign will surely put Cecil Blount DeMille to shame.

Now where were we...Also note my estimate included pro production/editing talent, whatever the hell that is. Hence $8K. But -- time to can the entertainment. Our disagreement about cost estimates is about as useful to the solving Rice's fundamental strategic problem as two drunks debating which of lushite can spit the furthest the fustest and the mostest. I am in complete agreement with your comment that the media is our tool and Rice should exploit it. Alas, it doesn't. Not like it could. Would you and your Hollycool mogul buds go talk to the prez, Big Dave, and like, get him to lay out $20K to buy some Parliament concocted media sizzle? It'll get the Owls three million bucks worth of recognition. And no, the bureaucrats don't get a veto. Who determines who or what is a bureaucrat? I'll let Ricefootball.net and Hambone rule on that.

We dropped KTRU because we said it didn't add value and are now focusing all of our media on the internet... and I generally agree that bandwith is "in" and radio frequency is out... but our need for outreach has not stopped... add to that how cheap it is, and we are "there".

In terms of the cost of equipment and people skills, shouldn't that sort of thing be part of a communications/marketing/business school at a University already? Perhaps it is vulgar to have students produce "professional" University content... but 80% of the new media vlogosphere is done with a webcam or a cell phone with tiny mic's and floor lamps or sunlight.

If Smackdaddy and 3 Owls are serious, seems like this guy might be a good start (taken from the page showing the Melissa Kean video yesterday):

About Brandon Martin
Greetings, I am a video producer at Rice University in Public Affairs. I became a Rice Owl in June of 2011. Before that I was at KPRC-TV in Houston as a special projects photojournalist for seven years. I covered everything from hurricanes to sports. Southeast Texas has been my home for my whole life. I am lucky to have a wonderful wife and one of the cutest baby girls I have ever seen. Go Owls!

I mentioned this in another thread, but Rice has been pumping out videos at a frantic pace every since this guy got hired. They're all of similar good quality, highlighting the things Rice is doing well, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeMzRNhwbVc

Or, for more athletic related videos: Ricky Pierce coming back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgZKDv_-ayQ)

Just go to the Rice youtube page.

The only thing Rice needs to do is focus more attention on specific ideas that could make a splash on the national stage, and then go and make that splash.

OK. Great idea and thank you for suggesting it. I'll look for the link and email Mr. Martin. But this puzzles me. Good press/media ideas often appear on this board. Do university PR mavens think of this board as an idea generator or resource? If they don't, why not? If they don't, is the neglect another example of Rice U. bureaucrat silo-vision?
