You can only stand so much atrocious spelling and grammar (both intentional and otherwise) before you start losing IQ points.

You learn some curse words you didn't know existed.

Until twitter, I never knew ish was another word for fecal matter.

I've known that one for almost 20 yrs

I think you're engaging the kid.

I don't think that's engaging the kid. What is the difference in sending out a tweet and posting the same message on a message board? If a kid googles his name and it leads him to xyz message board and he sends a link to his friends are you engaging him? The problem would be direct contact with the intent of acting as an agent on behalf of your team. Once these prospects have twitter accounts, facebook pages, and other publicly accessible information it becomes almost impossible, if not illegal, to regulate.

Posting it on a message board isn't.

Using google to see what people are saying about you isn't the same as having someone reach out to you to tell you they said something about you.

RE: A refresher
It doesn't say you cannot talk to them. It says you cannot sollicit them to come to your school. If you see a recruit on the street and you say hello it is not a violation if you see a recruit and in any way shape or form try to sollicit or encourage him to come to your school it is a violation. It's best to steal clear all together. It also asks that you stear clear of the coach when he is talkjng to a recruit. That said I have seen no violations by anyone associated with UAB.

Can't say the same for some other schools.

Check this part out.

As an athletic representative, you are not precluded from continuing friendships with families who have prospective or enrolled student-athletes (e.g. backyard barbeques, picnics). You simply cannot encourage a prospect's participation in the UAB athletic program or provide extra benefits to the student-athlete that you were not providing before he or she became a prospect or enrolled student-athlete.

RE: A refresher
UAB fans I hope would go above and beyond in order to stay clear of any violations.
Personally, I would not converse via twitter with any recruits until they have committed to UAB.
Even then, possibly until after they sign.
Sometimes I don't even follow a recruit until after he commits.
There are some that I currently follow that are prospects though.

If it seems kind of fishy, I would just stay away from it.

A good rule of thumb to follow is, if you have to ask whether it seems fishy, it probably is.

Technically a twitter id isn't a name, plus he didn't say he was tweeting it directly to said player, therefore my point is still valid. Message boards, twitter accounts, and facebook pages are indeed web based information sources with similar public accessibility therefore fall under the same umbrella.

That being said, I don't think fans should engage recruits but referencing them I don't have a problem with. ICB example, in my opinion, is a reference.

It is best to steal clear and watch.

Here is another one

May not provide them hospitality in your home other than for special occasions (e.g., Thanksgiving, birthday).

Boy I can see the two SEC schools in the state taking advantage if that one.

See Smaug. You can have all the Ckay Chaulkville kids over for Thanksgiving!

Lol. Joking if course.

Maybe I just don't understand twitter well enough.

If you include the kid's twitter ID, doesn't that ping him that someone has tweeted something about him, thus a de facto communication?

If so, I still think you're engaging the kid.

Yes, including his ID will ping him.

Engaging isn't the issue. It does not say you cannot say hello. (I recommend stearing clear any way) Soliciting is. Heck you can have them over for thanksgiving dinner according to the rule book but I would not dare go down that slippery slope.

We can leave that to the SEC.

UAB will dress 5 Clay-Chalkville kids on the football team in the fall (The Reaves Brothers, Vinson, Fuller, and McCollum) and about 10 in the marching band.

I had direct influence over exactly ONE of those kids. 03-lol

Smaug will have half of Clay Chaulkville over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Make sure the Turkeys and hams are EXTRA juicy.

This is a joke and not to be taken seriously.

But in ICB's example, his tweet said, "I sure hope @greatpg comes to UAB."

I think Jordan has one guy that is a flag guy in the band.

I had zero influence in that.
