I asked about why we didn't play more night games when I was a student the last few years and I was told the neighborhood complained. Was also told that is why we don't have any concerts at HRS like the old days but I would guess the Toyota center and reliant have just as much (if not more) to do with that.

Concerts may not be important to Rice athletics, except as a source of revenue; but accommodating football fans certainly should be. Our “good-neighbor” policy should be a two-way proposition. Rice’s neighbors should realize that, for 362 days a year, they enjoy the benefits of proximity to low density, park-like Rice campus. Three night football games each year should not be too much of a burden for them to accept.

Yup. Never really seen an issue with those choices.

Perhaps they didn't notice the 70,000 seat stadium because they bought their house in 1949. It's not like we're trying to play 'til midnight.

ETA and if they did buy their house in 1949, then they probably (a) have a fondness for Rice football and (b) can't hear the games inside the house anyway because they're at least 82 years old.

Also, it isn't like we actually have 70,000 people there. Most games have under 20k BIS - it isn't that loud and parking isnt that bad either.

RE: Two Rice Football games moved to Thursday
I think the complaint in the past has been the PA and the music from pre-recorded bits on screen. As I mentioned on another thread, I suspect part of the reason we don't charge for parking is to be good neighbors and encourage all attendees to park in the lots rather than in the neighborhood. And the traffic around campus for games is now worse than traffic in the Village on a Friday or Saturday night.

From 1950 to the late 1970s, Rice, UH or the Oilers would often draw big crowds to Rice Stadium. There was a lot of parking in the neighborhood and the the Village which I do not remember there being many complaints about. Back then, we did not have the horrible scoreboard music which was not needed since there were marching bands to provide the music. Not many games were televised so they were played when it was the best temperature-night games in October and day games in November. Not many games were televised because the NCAA still controlled television rights and would only televise a couple of games nationally each Saturday.

Also a source of complaint for actual game patrons.

There are still bands to provide music. However, they seem to have been shunted aside by the powers that be in favor of the scoreboard music.

this seemed to start with "Todd" and that half assed video board. I far prefer the MOB and the visiting bands.

I want a College atmosphere, not minor league.

If we must have scoreboard music, it should be MOB recordings...

Sure heard a lot of praise for Todd's video board at the time.

Credit where credit is due - the scoreboard is a nice addition to HRS. That said, just because we can blare music doesn't mean we should.

As someone who did not grow up in the Rice culture I can say that from my perspective that anything that takes away from something unique unto Rice, like the MOB, is a bad thing. The tiny old scoreboard was very small time. The new scoreboard fixed that mistake. Attempting to make the MOB irrelevant just created another mistake in my opinion.

RE: Two Rice Football games moved to Thursday
I don't think the video board itself was anything but a positive. It's one of the few things we have done in the last 40 years that indicated serious interest in having an athletic program. I still remember how nervous was the young tech rep who sat next to me in the PA booth that first night. I think he was pleasantly surprised when we turned it on and it actually came on. I got the distinct impression that Todd had worked a couple of brother-in-law deals to get it, and also that as often happens with those deals, a few corners may have been cut to get it up and running.

While I like the board, I can't say the same for some of the ways that I have seen it used.

The least we could do is paint the top portion...the blue is fading, but then again so is our athletic program.
