I think it is time to begin the discussion of adding ODU into the Commonwealth Cup competition with UVA and Virginia Tech. The competition between Tech and UVA has been going on for I think something like a hundred years, so that will be a tough nut to crack. The fact is however, that there are now three FBS schools in the Commonowealth. It will take some political pressure, but it seems reasonble to have the state's three FBS schools play each other every year in a round-robbin series with the Cup going to the school that sweeps the series in any year.

If we start the push now, we just may be able to make it happen by the time the stadium is expanded.

That is exactly the way I envision it. All three teams play each other every year. It would be a great new tradition for the Commonwealth. The only way to win the cup is to sweep your two games. The cup remains with whoeve won it last until a new cup winner is deterimined. It would be the same as the Commander's trophy given by POTUS to Army, Air Force or Navy, which ever of the Acadeamies sweeps the other two in a given year.

I think you misread what he wrote, he said the only way it happens is if ODU is playing on the road against them every year. I don't see it happening. It's a rivalry trophy. Louisville and UK won't include WKU in on the Governor's Trophy, so why would UVA and VT include us? What do they have to gain by including ODU?

That is why I indicated to push for after stadium expansion. That means they would only have to come here every other year, and it would be no different than playing at Duke (34,000) or Wake Forest (31,000) and even better after a second expansion.

Edit: You are correct. I did misread it the first time.

Wouldn't expect it to happen. If Virginia Tech won't keep the Black Diamond series with West Virginia intact, I don't see them committing to ODU every year. And in the event they did, they'd probably come up with some other trophy to fight over. The chances of getting U.Va. AND VT to play ODU every year are nil, and if politicos somehow force it, then they'd have to do the same if JMU ever moves up.

Better to build up a series with an opponent you know you'll have on the schedule. I could see Charlotte always being on the schedule even if one of the programs leaves CUSA, for example. I don't know what sort of trophy they'd fight for, though. The Old Bacon Egg and Cheese Biscuit?

Zero chance this happens. It's a meaningless trophy between the two schools.

Plenty of states have rivalries like this and the odds a small school gets in on those or the commonwealth cup is nil.

It'd be nice but I highly doubt it will occur. UVA and VT will fight tooth and nail to prevent an annual series with ODU (doesn't benefit them tremendously) and those schools (with their combined might) will always will win in a politics battle. Maybe if the Governor of Virginia was an ODU grad there would be a better chance but I don't see that happening for awhile.

However, I like the ambition! Maybe in the future when we start dominating CUSA!

Hmmmm. If I were a president running for a second term, I would be pretty worried right now. OK, so we put this idea on the back burner for a few years.
