Charlotte Wins Record Seventh A-10 Golf Championship
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Charlotte captured its Atlantic 10 record seventh golf championship on Sunday afternoon at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. The 49ers also claim the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals.
Menard and his teammates combined to shoot 278-285-281-844 to defeat second-place VCU by eight strokes. Temple finished third with a three day total of 861, while Xavier was fourth with a 291-287-285—863.
The 49ers were led by individual medalist Raoul Menard who shot nine under par to win his second consecutive conference crown. Just a sophomore, Menard shot a 67-71-69—207, while becoming the eighth player in A-10 history to win two career league championships.
Temple freshman Brandon Matthews finished second overall, two strokes behind Menard with a 71-68-70 – 209. For his efforts, Matthews was named the 2013 Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Year.
Charlotte’s Ryan Cabbage was honored by his peers as the 2013 A-10 Coach of the Year. Cabbage is in his second year at the helm of the Charlotte program.
Joining Menard and Matthews on the all-conference team was Braeden Cryderman (Charlotte), Franco Castro ( Charlotte), Branden Chicorka (Rhode Island), Daniel Walker (Richmond), Rocky Khara (VCU), Steffen Harm (VCU)Devin Bibeau (Temple), Korey Ward (Xavier).
