UMass to Sun Belt?
Sometimes you have to think outside the box.

Since there has been talk of the MAC demanding UMass go all sports instead of just football, and even some talk of them wanting a Grant of Rights from UMass, what about offering UMass football only and making NMSU a full member.

I think the only way you do something like that with Idaho on one hand and UMass on the other is to go to 16 teams with each division acting virtually as a separate conference under one umbrella. Interdivision games against a particular opponent might occur every four years or so. Otherwise, the West and East winners would play in the conference championship game.

I don't know what it's like in the Southern Conference, but things you have to think about in an FBS league is the ability to travel, take your band, etc., in order to create the kind of atmosphere you want to see so fans will want to attend, watch on TV, recruits will want to sign. It also impacts interest if a member only competes in one sport. For example, would you want Duke for football only if Coach K's bunch never came to your place for a basketball game?

The Sun Belt could negotiate so many basketball games of UMass be played with Sun Belt members as the MAC did. Even travel allotments might be applicable because of the distance. For UMass could be much better than their alternatives of being forced all into the MAC or Grants of Rights are true MAC talking points.

UMass is redoing their home campus football facility and only have to play three games per year in Gillette Stadium in Boston as of their new agreement. So that should bring better crowds for them.

RE: UMass to Sun Belt?
If UMass came on board with football only along with NMSU for all sports, which team from the west moves to the east for Olympic sports? Louisiana Lafayette or Louisiana Monroe?

But I don't want the Minutemen (that's what she said). Their football is their weakness! They have decent basketball. Inviting them football only would be equivalent to inviting NMSU football only and ignoring their basketball which would actually help us... Oh wait...

Another empty NFL stadium. Though they are a perfect fit to make cross divsion rival with Idaho.

Isn't the campus an hour drive from the stadium?

I thought they were only playing at Gillette temporarily while their OCS is expanded.

You are right. UMass is playing at Gillette Stadium one more year, while 17,000-seat McGurik Stadium is being expanded to 25,000 seats. Supposedly it will be completed by the 2014 season.

Sorry guys, Jax St is better then adding UMass football only. You guys might as well jump on the Big East bandwagon with the teams that are being suggested. One in Utah, SDSU and NDSU, UMass, are you kidding me??? That didn't work for them, they never made it to the field with that mess, and neither would we. Forget adding schools outside the footprint unless you are trying to create a 6th Gof5 conference because that is all that will happen. 03-banghead

Add Missouri State or JMU.Period. And then wait a couple of years for UTA to pull a USA and lets see where UNO is headed. There will be plenty of takers WITHIN the footprint in the next 2 to 5 years.

Believe they have an agreement with Gillette Stadium to still play three games there a year for the larger crowds that their home stadium cannot handle.
No one would say that it would be a perfect combination, but considering the vitriol about so many other possible adds they make a lot more sense than some might at first imagine.

There would be a lot of no votes. I know after CAA travel, no way GSU votes yes to UMass

Seems like # 12 may remain elusive a lot longer than the SB or Benson want.

Prevailing wisdom says that the ACC GOR made #12 worth its weight in gold

RE: UMass to Sun Belt?
Doesn't seem that some schools believe that it is since they cannot make a decision to proceed.
The schools that the Sun Belt does not seem to desire probably believe that it is worth even more than gold.

ACC GOR is 24 hrs old. Give it time. I can guarantee you schools who thought they had time Monday are...
