Tight end Travis Kelce is the one former University of Cincinnati player rated certain to be selected in the 2013 National Football League draft, but several other UC players have an outside chance.

Running back George Winn appears to have the best chance among other ex-UC hopefuls. Winn is regarded as a late-round possibility, after rushing for 1,334 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, defensive end Dan Giordano, linebacker Maalik Bomar, defensive end Walter Stewart, strong safety Drew Frey, and cornerbacks Camerron Cheatham and Dominique Battle are among other former Bearcats who could get looks, some as free agents.

“Kelce is the one (UC) guy you’re going to bang the table for and say he’s a draftable kid,” NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said in a recent teleconference. “George Winn could be seventh round or a priority free agent. He’s going to make a living in the NFL if he becomes a speial teams player first, then a positional player. But I like the kid on tape.”

ESPN analyst Mel Kiper also sees Winn as a potential late-rounder.

“I think he’s got a chance certainly to be a guy that can help a football team,” Kiper said via teleconference.

Among others, Stewart rated higher before a congenital spine abnormality ended his UC career last season. At the time, Stewart was the Big East active career sack leader (17.0).

Stewart sought to participate at the 2013 NFL Combine in February but was red-flagged medically. Stewart did participate in the Bearcats’ NFL Pro Timing Day at UC in March.

Bearcats' Travis Kelce hopes to join his brother in NFL

Travis Kelce would love to join his brother on the Philadelphia Eagles, but any of the 32 National Football League teams would suit Kelce just fine.

Tight end Kelce is the University of Cincinnati’s top-rated prospect for the NFL draft beginning Thursday, and generally is projected to be chosen in the third or fourth round. Kelce’s brother, Jason, is an Eagles center who was a sixth-round pick from UC in 2011.

“It would be nice to team up with my brother,” Travis Kelce said. “Two Kelce boys on the same team, you’d get all that attitude and hard work together. At the same time, it doesn’t matter what team. I just want the opportunity.”

Travis Kelce in 2012 led the Bearcats in receptions (45), receiving yardage (722) and TD catches (8). The receptions and yardage were UC season records for a tight end, and the TDs tied the Bearcats season record for the position.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Kelce has impressed NFL scouts with his blocking, soft hands, toughness and speed. Kelce earlier this month clocked a 40 dash time of 4.64 seconds at his Pro Day workout. The time placed Kelce third among tight ends in his class.

Kelce is projected as a third-round draftee by both NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock and CBS Sports/NFLdraftscout.com analyst Rob Rang. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper sees Kelce in the fourth round mix.

“What I like about him, he’s got pretty good run after the catch ability,” Kiper said in a teleconference. “This is a kid that when he snags that ball and gets in the open field, with his size and his athleticism he can do some damage.”

One knock on Kelce is the year-long suspension he served at UC in 2010, for an undisclosed violation of team rules. His 2012 production and work ethic are positives, but for some the stigma remains.

“Kelce is really a better player than people thought,” Mayock said in a teleconference. “He had the off-the-field issues, but he’s got explosion and he might be the best blocker (among the top tight ends).”

Rang said Kelce rates as the No.5 overall tight end. Kelce had only 14 career catches before last year, but he was a dynamic force as a senior.

“He’s arguably the best all-around tight end in the draft but the fact that he started one season at the position, is coming off of injury and has some off-field baggage are concerns,” Rang said via email. “There is no denying his unique combination of size, athleticism and physicality, not only after the catch but as a blocker.”

Kelce said he took pre-draft visits to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Miami, Jacksonville, Detroit, the New York Jets, Cleveland, San Francisco, Washington, Indianapolis and the Bengals.

Kelce, from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, has heard the speculation about when he might be drafted.

“You’re always interested in that stuff, to see where you’re projected,” Kelce said. “I don’t let any of it get to my head. I know what teams are telling me, and they’re telling me I’m going to go sooner rather than later.”

Giordano and Bomar aren't surprising to me. Winn should be getting more love, though. He'll probably shock some teams.

No kidding. On the bright side, I can always hope that the Bengals will sign all three after the draft.

I am chalking it up to home team homerism that ppl believe Winn is a potential NFL back. I see a straight line runner with limited shake and speed. He runs straight up and would take an absolute pounding.

Think it was Kiper Jr. saying he would be a late round steal. You can disagree with his analysis but I don't believe he is a big UC homer.

I can understand where you're coming from but he's got the motor and size to withstand that pounding. If not he's a pretty solid blocker who could develop into the lead blocking back out of split-back formations like he was when Isaiah Pead was here.

Agreed. I don't know where this "homerism" idea is coming from. The consensus is he will get drafted. Nobody, UC fan or not, is talking about him as a likely Day 1 or Day 2 pick. Kiper in particular (among those who make their living as draft experts) sees him as a sleeper who could outperform his expected draft position.

This. If it doesn't work out, he will have a fine career as a special teams player in the NFL. If you are not a kicker or a kick returner one is often overlooked at this position group but George was fantastic for us on special teams the past few years. I can see someone like New England (or one of the teams now coached by a former Patriot Assistant) picking him up because he is the type of guy they have drafted under Belichick.

Say what you will about Winn, but it's all about his ability to help out on special teams. If a team likes his skill set enough that they feel he can add depth, and play on special teams, that's good value...Stewart has already been identified as a guy who would have been a second day pick had he not been stricken with the congenital vertebrae issue. WTBS, there are many teams that will jump on him around the 5th to take that chance that he's gonna be fine. Remember the CBA has taken the monetary risk away for teams taking guys after the 5th. He's worth it period. You gotta look at it from the stand point that any player taken after the 3-4th round, is a guy whose potential is that of someone who can eventually make a roster within the standard 4 year deal. Again it's all about how a team evaluates the players potential at the next level.
Too many knotheads have not even mentioned Hooey, who by all means has too many attributes looked for in a proto-typical NFL OT.
Just because Jones/Mahoney threw the guy under the bus, isn't any reason at all to doubt his capabilities/potential. He is definitely going to be a PFA if he doesn't get taken in the late rounds.
