There's simply too much money out there for it not to happen. It'll be analogous to the formation of the English Premier League, except I don't think there'll be a promotion/relegation scheme. The only questions I see at this time are exactly how many schools will be in the College Premier League, and whether both the ACC and Big 12 will exist as a conference within it.
For me, if we are going to be relegated to official second tier status, i.e. there is a clear break, I'd want to drop football and focus on baseball and basketball. And I wouldn't be interested in college football at all any more. Given the choice between the NFL and a poor man's NFL, I'll just watch the NFL.
And, no, no one needs to lecture me on how it's de facto already happened. I get that, though I hope that at some point the playoff will be expanded. Right now, however non BCS team can still make a BCS bowl, be in the top 25, etc. If Rice can aspire to and do that, I'm happy. Split into two divisions and that's gone, and I don't care about college football any more. Focus on being Rice in baseball and Gonzaga or Butler in basketball...
I fear that when the split occurs it will be for all sports. We won't have the opportunity any longer to be Rice in baseball or Gonzaga in basketball. If that occurs I see no point in being higher than D3.
If that happens, I would agree. I guessing it won't though - too much of college basketball history and charm is the non-football schools.
