However, Bell was unimpressive the two games I saw him live. Also, the Big 12 has failed to play defense the past few years, so racking up stats on offense is easier than average.
From all reports, the kid has a good arm and a soft touch for the short passes, accuracy and velocity for the long ones. However, he remained #3 behind Bell who reminds me more of Tebow, a running back that handles the ball and occasionally throws it. Bell was primarily used in short yardage and goal line play where a bulldozer was more beneficial. Also, I was not impressed with Bell's game/clock management, which by extrapolation implies that Allen's overall QB abilities were less than Bell's, who appears second rate in an overall perspective.
I think he will be given a fair shot a the job, but I see him more as an insurance policy to take time and develop the younger QBs without having to throw them into an emergency situation.
These are my opinions and I have already been castigated by my fellow fans on the Syracuse board, but I still hold to them. He will have a lot more to prove to me, or worse, our QB situation is really hosed right now.
I haven't seen either Alen or Bell play, so take anything that I say for what it's worth, which isn't much. However, based on what you said, and from what I know about OU, this could be equally plausable:
*OU had an elite starting QB, and Allen was the #3 QB on paper because Bell was better in niche situations, so he had some playing time.
*OU isn't interested in starting Allen this year, because he is a 5th year senior and they have a younger decelntly-polished QB in the pipe, so they figure that if they start Allen, then not only will they will lose all their investment after the season ends, but they will miss out on a chance to develop the next great Sooner QB.
In other words, Allen's position might not reflect his ability. Stroops might just want to start the OU-equal to the Nassib project a year ...sooner (get it?) than waste a year on the OU-equal to Greg Paulus.
Once again, obviously take that for what it's worth. I am merely playing devil's advocate. But, if it's true, then SU could be in an excellent position. We might have a solid QB this year, and a developed red shirt freshman talented QB next year, who is going to be around for the next 4 years. Given our ability to churn out good RB's (thanks to Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Larry Csonka, and co.) and WR's (thanks to the Dome), then we could have one heck of an offense in about 2-3 years. Furthermore, since our HC is one of the best DC's that I have ever seen, SU will be especially dangerous is we ever get a good offense. That said, the best laid plans of mice and men...
I good with others having opinions. Mine is different, I would like to be wrong, but giving credit to a system that played against no serious defenses tends to inflate an offense's numbers.
Overall, Syracuse will be fine and should have a winning season. Our RB's will be the main focus and as such, I would rather bring in a younger QB, i.e. Hunt, than waste a year on Allen. If HCSS uses Allen to buy a year for one of the new recruits, then I will understand. However, I'm still not impressed with his college accolades and the idea that Syracuse fans are ecstatic about getting a 3rd string QB from another school, no matter how successful the school was, does not automatically translate into an outstanding recruit.
I will admit that beating out NCState for the recruit is very pleasing.
