Oklahoma QB tansferring to 'Cuse
Drew Allen, a former QB for the Oklahoma Sooners, is transferring to Syracuse. He's a senior with one year of eligibility remaining, he'll be able to play immediately.

My guess is he'll likely start. He's played in 12 games for Oklahoma - 18 for 30 with 160 passing yards - 5 rushes for 17 yards.

With Nassib heading to the first or second round of the draft, the QB position is wide open in Syracuse. Landing a coveted transfer, with game experience in the Big XII, is very important for SU heading into the ACC. It's not impressive, but it's important. Which is why I'm sharing here.

We'll see...the kid played behind Sam Bradford and Landry Jones...not SMU quality QBs but kinda decent.

Too bad you couldn't have gotten him for Spring Practice. He must be pretty confident he can win the Syracuse job or was buried on the depth chart in Oklahoma.

He was the third sting Oklahoma QB after Landry Jones and Blake "The Belldozer" Bell. Bell will be the Sooners starter this season.

Allen is 6'5" and 226. He has the size and should have the arm. I wonder why he was behind Bell, though.

I was reading about Allen and I stumbled across this:

http://www.syracuse.com/orangefootball/i...n_mic.html

Look at the picture and notice the conference on the jersey. Take a second and think about it. That guy will never play a BIG EAST snap, or even go to a school in the BIG EAST.

How many scholarships do you still have open?

Not sure...but we kicked two kids off the team a few weeks ago. That opened up some slots. Coach Shafer is not afraid to use the JUCO ranks to fill needs. I gotta think we are done now...maybe 1 more scholie available. We've had some luck with late adds and JUCO players: more hits than misses.

RE: Oklahoma QB tansferring to 'Cuse
I remain a skeptic about Allen. He was #3 behind a decent OU starter and Bell, the new starter. However, Bell was unimpressive the two games I saw him live. Also, the Big 12 has failed to play defense the past few years, so racking up stats on offense is easier than average.

From all reports, the kid has a good arm and a soft touch for the short passes, accuracy and velocity for the long ones. However, he remained #3 behind Bell who reminds me more of Tebow, a running back that handles the ball and occasionally throws it. Bell was primarily used in short yardage and goal line play where a bulldozer was more beneficial. Also, I was not impressed with Bell's game/clock management, which by extrapolation implies that Allen's overall QB abilities were less than Bell's, who appears second rate in an overall perspective.

I think he will be given a fair shot a the job, but I see him more as an insurance policy to take time and develop the younger QBs without having to throw them into an emergency situation.

These are my opinions and I have already been castigated by my fellow fans on the Syracuse board, but I still hold to them. He will have a lot more to prove to me, or worse, our QB situation is really hosed right now.

I haven't seen either Alen or Bell play, so take anything that I say for what it's worth, which isn't much. However, based on what you said, and from what I know about OU, this could be equally plausable:
*OU had an elite starting QB, and Allen was the #3 QB on paper because Bell was better in niche situations, so he had some playing time.
*OU isn't interested in starting Allen this year, because he is a 5th year senior and they have a younger decelntly-polished QB in the pipe, so they figure that if they start Allen, then not only will they will lose all their investment after the season ends, but they will miss out on a chance to develop the next great Sooner QB.

In other words, Allen's position might not reflect his ability. Stroops might just want to start the OU-equal to the Nassib project a year ...sooner (get it?) than waste a year on the OU-equal to Greg Paulus.

Once again, obviously take that for what it's worth. I am merely playing devil's advocate. But, if it's true, then SU could be in an excellent position. We might have a solid QB this year, and a developed red shirt freshman talented QB next year, who is going to be around for the next 4 years. Given our ability to churn out good RB's (thanks to Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Larry Csonka, and co.) and WR's (thanks to the Dome), then we could have one heck of an offense in about 2-3 years. Furthermore, since our HC is one of the best DC's that I have ever seen, SU will be especially dangerous is we ever get a good offense. That said, the best laid plans of mice and men...

I good with others having opinions. Mine is different, I would like to be wrong, but giving credit to a system that played against no serious defenses tends to inflate an offense's numbers.

Overall, Syracuse will be fine and should have a winning season. Our RB's will be the main focus and as such, I would rather bring in a younger QB, i.e. Hunt, than waste a year on Allen. If HCSS uses Allen to buy a year for one of the new recruits, then I will understand. However, I'm still not impressed with his college accolades and the idea that Syracuse fans are ecstatic about getting a 3rd string QB from another school, no matter how successful the school was, does not automatically translate into an outstanding recruit.

I will admit that beating out NCState for the recruit is very pleasing.

I think that you're right that the Big XII's inability to play defense tends to inflate Big XII offensive stats. However, I think that Big XII offenses tend to be objectively good, especially OU. None the less, you're right that signing another team's 3rd string QB certainly doesn't guarantee success. I also don't disagree about the idea of developing future talent. That said, I am also against playing true freshmen, except in select circumstances. I think 5 year players are MUCH better than 4 year players, and I think that redshirting for a year helps players mature (the same goes in the NFL with rookie QB's). If Allen is insurance, then I am OK with it. If Allen is a solution that keeps SU competitive and helps establish a system that we can use to develop future talent, then I am excited about it.

I honestly don't know enough about the guy to have an informed opinion, and I definitely understand why you're cautious. However, he looked good in high school as per his highlights, he has had 4 years of college to improve, and OU is known for developing high quality players. I doubt that he will be the next McNabb, but I would be surprised if he isn't at least average, which is good enough for now.

Btw, don't let syfan get you down. They're an embarrassment to my (possibly our) alma mater.

No worries on Syracusefan.com getting me down, they are a great group, overall and most don't take everything personal so we have good discussions, compared to most other sites.

I'm not a Syracuse grad, just a hometown fan loyal to the local team. I earned my degree while serving in the Air Force and the school I graduated from is Div. III so I have no issues keeping true to the Orange.

I just hope we have a QB that is functional. And Syracusefan.com isn't that bad. Overall I enjoy the banter & appreciate Orangeyes news article collections.

From the Spring Game: Looks like Terrel Hunt is the strong #1 among the three current QBs (Hunt, Loeb and Kinder). Hunt is your typical dual threat guy but needs more work on his throws. Dare I say we could have a 2 QB race in the Fall (Hunt vs Allen). It'll be interesting. I wouldn't quite write-off Kinder and Loeb yet...the setup yesterday gave a huge advantage for Hunt (1st Team O vs 2nd Team D).

Charley Loeb did a nice job handling snaps last year for the kicker...hopefully that continues. Always good to have a QB doing that if something breaks down or for a trick play. Edit: heard the 2nd string punter (Dixon) is being groomed to hold the snaps.
