Great story, great gift. Maybe W&M will look at returning to 1A football!

Wish we had some big donors like that. Good for W&M.

Edit: also wish I knew how to spell "donors"

We may not have alums with the total wealth of the Zables but we have a number of successful alums that are either just now rounding into their highest earning years (45-65) or are about to hit their respective earning strides. Everyone should have an estate plan (Will, trust, medical directives, and powers of attorney). In the upcoming fund raising campaign, our Development folks should be pushing to get 25,000 alums to leave large gifts to JMU in their respective Wills ($100,000 or more) while getting the same $25,000 to give $10,000 or more over the life of the campaign. I realize my goal of 25,000 alums may be a real reach. I'm dreaming big like Pres. Alger has asked us to do.

With the estate and gift tax thresholds set so high, I doubt we'll ever see the level of giving other schools have seen in the past.

If we could get 25 alumni to leave 100,000 I would be surprised.

Most people live too long and spend all of their money to have anything left to give. I'd be curious how many CRUTs get set up each year or how many JMU even manages.

Btw is 25,000 x $100,000 $2.5B?

I like the ambition, but the ivies don't get CLOSE to that level of participation. I often wonder who is in control of our giving..... They are so ridiculously out of touch with reality.

Yes. Yes it is. Getting 25,000 to give $100 would be a better start....

I'm also interested to know who is in charge of our giving. My current boss/owner of the company went to UVA. A new job that I'm about to start is going to be with a company owned by W&M alum. I would make cold calls one night a month for free to try and get some donations.

I want to work for Dukes.

About time they did some renovations they have one of worst Visiting team rooms in the conference. The coaches booth is only large enough for 3 coaches to sit in. I saw 2 of our coaches standing outside last time we were there, asked them why, they said they could not see the last 20 yard of the field, and could not even see the scoreboard for time left on the clock. W&M's coaches sit atop the Home stands and have full unclutered view of the entire field and scoreboard.

Clearly remember Durden leaning out of the coach's box window in 2004.

RE: W&M Recieves ~$24Million Gift from Zable estate...
I was too aggressive. Lets start with 2,500 that give $10,000( $2,000 a year for 5 years) in the upcoming campaign. That gives us $25,000,000 and a good way to build a good relationship with those people for the next round. We should target the class of 1969-2009. That gives us a 40 year span. We need 62.5 people from each class to give $10,000. I expect that we need to count on the classes of 1975-1995 as the ones that will need to have more than 62.5 people give $10,000. I think we need 120 people from that 20 year span to make up for the lower numbers from the 1969-1974 and 1996-2009 classes.

We should also be able to get estate gifts of $10,000 from 5,000 alums. Estate gifts are easy. That gives us $50,000,000. I have no idea what the development strategy is at JMU but the above could be a good starting place.

That's more in the ballpark.....optimistic, but closer.

Not true. Tribe coaches are on the sideline with the players. Always.

There are no high view seats on the home side and the visitor's side is packed with exposed wires and a couple of broadcasters brave enough to enter. Zable is 78 years old and was once used to show livestock (cue co-ed jokes)...that's the reason for the stupid cow tunnel at the visitor's side 50. We can't touch what is already built so we either have to build around it (endzones) or raze Zable and start from scratch. Hell, we've only had stadium lights for a few years...smh.

Why would estate gifts be easy?

People don't do that as often as you think. Realistically social security will dry up or at least be pushed back until mid 70s. There are no more defined benefits plans. You should expect to work until you die or at least have your assets spent down to the point where you qualify for Medicaid and can go into a nursing home. Living longer is a financial curse. Gone are the days where the wealthy widow leaves her multimillion dollar estate to her alma mater. That money would have been given to children or spent on medical expenses years ago.
