BUT, I think we are short selling the importance of the calendar. Someone, of several different sources here and on the Zone have posted about what is at stake, simply dependent on when we even make a announcement. If it's June 30, I think football is ineligible for the CAA title, the other sports as well. Further we take a full years worth of the NCAA shares coming in from the FF run(s?) and the 2 shares @ 60% we just scored.
If we can possibly wait until the next day, then the new year has started and we can still participate and recieve that which is coming.
I think this all correct, but maybe that's my misunderstanding of things. It's just what I've put together from stuff elsewhere, so I could be completely wrong and confident someone will correct me if so.
But the underlying point remains- the timing of this might be far more impartant than what we think, and that includes even announcing "intent".
There are really two distinct issues: 1) timing of an announcement and 2) timing of paperwork filing.
If we declare our intentions to leave the CAA at any point prior to the completion of the fotball season, we become inelligible for the CAA football title. GMU's spring sports teams are inelligible this year, despite the fact that the seasons had already started.
If we file the paperwork for a move to FBS prior to June 30, we can begin playing FBS football as a transitional member in 2014, but we will not be elligible for the FCS playoffs in 2013. Waiting until after June 30 allows us to compete for the playoffs in 2013, but delays our move to FBS by one year.
There are really three options:
1) Announce before June 30; file paperwork before June 30
- Football team inelligible for CAA title or FCS playoffs
- Start FBS football in 2014
2) Announce before June 30; file paperwork after June 30
- Football team inelligible for CAA title, but elligible for FCS playoffs
- Start FBS football in 2015
3) Announce after football season; file paperwork after football season
- Football team elligible for CAA title and FCS playoffs
- Start FBS football in 2015
The other consideration is basketball. If we want to avoid the CAA penalty box for basketball, we need to annouce a move prior to June 30 effective July 1 for non-football sports. The other option is waiting until April 2014 to announce and moving effective July 1, 2014.
