Like the old Big East, when UConn lost millions of $$$ going to the Fiesta Bowl.

Just because they were distributed to students or subsidized at a discount doesn't mean that 14,000 went unpaid for. The alumni, excluding yourself paid for them. Who they were paid for by doesn't matter, the fact that somebody flipped the bill is all that matters. I don't think you actually comprehend that.
Yeah I'm sure NIU was sand bagging their tickets sold number in an attempt to make their tickets sold figure look worse lol.

This is an old argument that I have no interest in having. I wasn't trying to start it, just pointing out NIU probably would have took a pretty epic loss if it wasn't for the MAC (which I think most people already knew).

And yes, with all the free advertising and such of course the Orange Bowl was a net positive.

Usually, and NIU was that team in 2011, the team that wins the MAC still manages to get destroyed by an OOC team or two during the season, and that helps to keep the MAC out of the BCS bowls.

The 2012 Huskies put the MAC in a BCS bowl game for the first time, so one hand washes the other. If this becomes a trend, where the top MAC team also ends up in the top 12, whatever losses the MAC endures from the bowl trip will be more than made up for in increased ticket sales, TV contracts, and merchandising.

Was it ever reported how much we made from the 2012 Soldier Field game? This one seems to be a long kept secret.

RE: Orange Bowl financials?
According to this article NIU broke even on the Orange Bowl.

And success comes from a team effort, according to Shelly Binegar, associate athletic director at Northern Illinois University. Binegar spoke of the Huskies' recent Orange Bowl appearance and how the university was able to manage and capitalize on the game.

A bowl appearance can cost a college millions of dollars, but NIU received assistance from the Mid-America Conference to offset much of the costs. While there was an $8 million payout for the Orange Bowl appearance, Binegar noted the money went to the conference, which will decide how the money will be split among member schools.

"We broke even, we didn't make any money from the Orange Bowl," she said. "But it's really about being collegial and helping the conference."

The exposure NIU received from the bowl appearance has paid off in terms of increased donations to the school, as well renewed interest from alumni and an 11 percent increase in admission applications this year.

"That's what a successful sports program can do for your university," Binegar said.

RE: Orange Bowl financials?
if there is any way to quantify the dollar value of donations resulting directly from the orange bowl plus the increased potential student interest, i would bet that we came out ahead.

the important question isn't how we did financially, it is how does NIU use this to leverage more interest in games this coming year.

The $12mm Orange Bowl payout will cover those tickets/expenses and still give all the MAC teams a nice little bonus.

Orange Bowl: 2012 MAC Champion’s NIU battled the Florida State Seminoles in the 2013 Discover Orange Bowl

Following the announcement, many questions were asked about the impact of the bowl announcement as it relates to increased application (i.e. Flutie Effect). In looking at it in a short-term sense, it does appear that there was a very considerable effect on application production following the announcement of the Orange Bowl berth. The table below measures the applications on the weekend of the announcement vs. the previous four weekends in comparison to the same period the year before.

Weekend Applications Nov - 1st week of Dec 2012 vs. 2011
2012 Apps 2011 Apps Pct change
Sunday, November 25, 2012 263 Sunday, November 27, 2011 213 23%
Sunday, November 18, 2012 152 Sunday, November 20, 2011 146 4%
Sunday, November 11, 2012 246 Sunday, November 13, 2011 329 -25%
Sunday, November 04, 2012 317 Sunday, November 06, 2011 242 31%
Total November Sundays 978 930 5%
Sunday, December 02, 2012 300 Sunday, December 04, 2011 96 213%

However, looking at application production currently in regards to the post announcement time period it is seen that applications are only showing a two percent increase over the pre-announcement period in comparison to the previous year.
