Not so long ago Texas had: Southwest Texas State, North Texas State, East Texas State, and West Texas State. Old Southwest Texas State clearly came-out ahead and was more politically astute with the name changes (to Texas State).
Congrats, Texas State University!
yes a few years ago several schools could have nabbed the texas state name. good pick up for you guys.
Actually no one but TXST could have the name. I met the man who works for TXST in our business school and he went to the texas legislature either in the late 60s or early 70s and reserved the rights to the name. It was a race to get the name reserved because rumor was that UNT was going to try and get the name. The reason they waited so long is because it is costly, you need the right student, alumni and faculty support. We lost some support from older alum when the change happened, but who cares. The school, students, alumni, and faculty are way better off since then.
either way getting that name was a home run and getting Dr. Trauth was as well...the name change was probably her first major initiative and it was not without the naysayers and they had shot it down once before, but she told them get on board or go away because it is going to happen
the next 10 years from there was pretty much nothing but success after success.....20 million for the McCoy College, the Engineering programs and 7 million for them and pretty much placed right into an area of central Texas need and specialization, development of PhD programs, emerging research status, growth of research funding, graduation rates, freshman class metrics have all been major successes under her watch and now moving to D1-A and getting some decent private funding for that
I am sure there have been "issues" for someone somewhere because there always are, but probably the one single thing I could nitpick if I was FORCED at gun point to say she might have messed up slightly was having the fund raising campaign foe the $120 million (that was also a HUGE success and is still going) before meeting emerging research status because that cash was raised without matching TRIP dollars....but really that is PURE HINDSIGHT because no one say that money coming available and realistically some of the money like sac n pac money came because of the passing of someone and you take the cash when you gets it PERIOD
really I think it would be possible to wait a year or two at the most and start another campaign right back up for 200 million over 8 years or maybe 250 million over 8
the reality is so much has been done, but there is still so much more to go...I would say add 2 engineering programs like civil and environmental (as one together) and mechanical, and also engineering physics (which is already in the physics department plan).....elevate one or two more majors to the same statue as geography and aquatics (world class), increase the endowment to 200-250 million+.....lower student to faculty ration by 2(in addition to further lowering it by doing the things needed to increase per FTE state formula funding)...library to NRL status, college of business ranked in the major publications.....increase number of endowed chairs from 16 to 50+
I think 200 to 250 million raised the right way and to the right places could make that happen pretty easily
