Random Recruiting Question
One of my players (H.S. Junior) is being recruited to play at JMU. I have no idea exactly how interested JMU is on their side (could be very serious or could be not as much), but he has visits at JMU, Richmond, and UMass over the next couple of weekends. I had a couple of questions which maybe some of you may be able to shed some light on:

1) Does JMU offer half-athletic and half academic, or is it pretty much only full athletic for football scholarships?

2) Is there any worry about losing a scholarship if JMU is 1-AA at the start of his enrollment, but makes the transition to 1-A during his sophomore or junior year?

I honestly don't know how JMU does things with regard to question #1. My thoughts on question #2 would probably be no...but I figured I would ask.

Thanks for any help...

RE: Random Recruiting Question
JMU football offers partial athletic scholarships. He can earn another academic scholarship to close the gap, but would need to do that on his own or ask the Athletics office for guidance.

1A football does not allow partial scholarships. We'll have to see how this plays out during whatever transition we have. Not sure if partial scholarship players are usually dumped during a transition. I would think not, but I don't know firsthand.

RE: Random Recruiting Question
Like HyperDuke says, FCS football is an NCAA equivalency sport which does allow partials. The 63 total scholarships can be divided amongst 85 total students. Not positive but I think the minimum that can be offered to any one student is a 25% scholarship. FBS is a head count sport and only fulls are allowed.

Not sure what would happen in an FBS transition, but remember that it occurs over a two year period. Also, if you look at it from another angle it could end up being a windfall to him. If, for example, he starts out as a 50% partial JMU may end up having to bump it to a full during or at the end of a transition.
